Alcoholic beverages and carbonated beverages may dehydrate you so be sure to drink lots of water! Use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher, and reapply frequently. Protect your eyes from the sun by wearing wraparound sunglasses that provide 100% UV ray protection. If you aren’t sure if local drinking water is safe, make sure you stock up on bottled water.

STDs don’t take a break when you are on break. If you're going to be sexually active, wear a condom. Take precautions against sexual violence and avoid situations or people that may place you at risk for harm. Never go to an isolated place with a stranger or someone you do not fully trust.

If you choose to drive, be aware new road rules. Be aware of the law and ordinances governing alcohol and drug use at your destination.

Know local laws regarding alcohol. Watch out for your friends. Always keep your beverage in sight. Know the signs of alcohol poisoning. Avoid high-risk drinking. Do not drink and drive. Drinking and basking in the sun can lead to dehydration -- drink plenty of water. Don’t take beverages from people that you do not know or trust. If you choose to drink alcohol, space each alcoholic drink with water.

Stay with friends. Practice the buddy system. Make sure someone always knows where you are. buddy system. Do not leave with strangers.

Take few valuables, and keep them in a safe if possible. Make sure you have the required vaccinations. You can find them here: If you are traveling abroad, keep your passport in a secure location at all times. If you take medications, pack enough for the entire trip.

Report stolen cell phones or credit cards immediately so they can cancel your service. Carry a cell phone with you in case of an emergency. Carry your identification and important medical information on your person in case of an emergency. Know who to contact locally in case of emergency BEFORE an emergency occurs.

Never swim alone, and avoid swimming when no lifeguard is present. Do not drink while swimming or operating a boat. If swimming or boating be sure you know how to swim, wear a life jacket, and check out the area or vessel for any hazards. There may be temptations on your break that involve different or high-risk activity. Think twice before putting yourself at risk for injury. Only participate in activities for which you are qualified. Be sure to use appropriate safety gear before venturing out, such as seat belts, life vests, or knee pads.
