Definition Integrate- join two or more objects or make something part of a larger whole, or be made part of a larger whole. For commissioning an integrated system test can be defined as: a test that brings previously functionally tested systems together and simultaneously will test the designed control sequence for all associated systems as a whole in various modes. 5/7/20152

Examples of Integrated System Test I have included 3 examples of types of integrated system test. Stair pressurization system which could be in most buildings Hospital considerations that could work for a multitude of systems Laboratory and/or vivarium considerations that become more complex 5/7/20153

Examples of Integrated System Test This discussion is for only HVAC systems but the same type of testing should be considered for life safety, security, lighting, plumbing, elevators, and any kind of special process systems. 5/7/20154

Examples of Integrated System Test Stairwell Pressurization Emergency power system with stair well pressurization system. In buildings that have floors 75 feet above grade a stair pressurization is required. The system will be tested under normal power when originally tested. When the building looses power and the power is transferred to the emergency generator the stair pressurization system will be retested, which is an integration of the emergency power system with the stair pressurization system. 5/7/20155

Examples of Integrated System Test Stairwell Pressurizati This test will determine the stairwell pressurization fans start after emergency power has been established and they are operating with the correct rotation. This test will also establish the dampers, alarms and smoke detectors are operational under emergency power. The last part of this test will be to verify everything is operational after returning to normal power. 5/7/20156

Examples of Integrated System Test Hospitals HVAC Systems with Emergency Power the IST will verify the following: Air Handling Units (AHUs) Start under emergency power with correct rotation All control loops are operational All dampers are operational All terminal boxes are operational 5/7/20157

Examples of Integrated System Test Hospitals Systems returned to normal power Restart under normal power, AHUs and fan systems should follow the designed start sequence All control loops are operational All systems back to their normal operation All dampers are operational and are in the correct position 5/7/20158

Examples of Integrated System Test Hospitals Exhaust Fans (EFs) Start under emergency power with correct rotation All control loops are operational All dampers are operational All terminal boxes are operational 5/7/20159

Examples of Integrated System Test Hospitals Return to normal power Restart under normal power All control loops are operational All dampers are operational All terminal boxes are operational 5/7/201510

Examples of Integrated System Test Hospitals Chilled Water Pumps Start under emergency power with correct rotation All control loops are operational All valves are operational Sufficient coils are operational to properly load system Caution systems with coils may not start at the same time the pump starts. 5/7/201511

Examples of Integrated System Test Hospitals Return to normal power Restart under normal power All control loops are operational All valves are operational Sufficient coils are operational to properly load system Caution systems with coils may not start at the same time the pump starts. 5/7/201512

Examples of Integrated System Test Hospitals Hot Water Pumps Start under emergency power with correct rotation All control loops are operational All valves are operational Sufficient coils are operational to properly load system Caution systems with coils may not start at the same time the pump starts. 5/7/201513

Examples of Integrated System Test Hospitalst Boilers and Heat Exchangers Start under emergency power with correct rotation All control loops are operational All valves are operational Sufficient pumps are operational to properly load system Caution systems with coils may not start at the same time the pump starts. 5/7/201517

Examples of Integrated System Test Hospitals Test Return to normal power Restart under normal power All control loops are operational All valves are operational Sufficient pumps are operational to properly load system Caution systems with coils may not start at the same time the pump starts. 5/7/201518

Examples of Integrated System Test Hospitals Smoke Control Systems Under Emergency Power All fans and AHUs are off or operating as shown on the smoke control matrix All fans start under emergency power with correct rotation as shown on the smoke control matrix All control loops are operational All dampers are operational and are in the correct position as shown on the smoke control matrix 5/7/201519

Examples of Integrated System Test Hospitals All fans and AHUs stopping and starting meet NFPA 92 and the International Building Code time constraints All damper opening and closing meet the standards mentioned above All smoke barriers maintain the correct pressure relationships as shown on the smoke control matrix 5/7/201520

Examples of Integrated System Test Hospitals Smoke Control Systems Under Normal Power All fans and AHUs return to their normal operation. All dampers return to their normal operation 5/7/201521

Examples of Integrated System Test Laboratories and Vivariums Air Handling Units (AHUs) and Exhaust Systems integrated at the lab or Vivarium Verify all room pressures are stabilized HVAC Systems with Emergency Power Air Handling Units (AHUs) and associated Exhaust systems Start under emergency power with correct rotation (If the control system has UPS power the control program will require additional programming to avoid alarms and be able to start the systems) Verify all control loops are operational Verify all dampers are operational Verify all valves are operational 5/7/201522

Examples of Integrated System Test Laboratories and Vivariums Verify startup follows the specified start procedure and how long it takes to establish all room pressures Review the transfer switch time and which systems are assigned to each transfer switch Be careful with rooms that are to be positive, when the sequence requires the exhaust system to be operational before the supply systems are allowed to start On large manifold systems (both supply and exhaust) trending may be required on all AHUs, EFs, room pressurization, alarms, and control loops 5/7/201523

Examples of Integrated System Test Laboratories and Vivariums Return to normal power Restart under normal power (If the control system has UPS power the control program will require additional programming to avoid alarms and start the systems) All control loops are operational All dampers are operational All valves are operational 5/7/201524

Examples of Integrated System Test Laboratories and Vivariums Smoke Control Systems in Labs and Vivariums are usually passive, if an AHU goes down because of an internal smoke detector the exhaust will remain operational but this test should consider the negative pressures created in the building If there is a smoke control Verify which fans and AHUs are off or operating as shown on the smoke control matrix All control loops are operational All dampers are operational and are in the correct position as shown on the smoke control matrix 5/7/201529
