Learning Targets I can analyze the roots of the conflict that culminated in the Civil War. I can describe the effects of sectionalism on the U.S. in its early years. I can analyze the influence that the Founding Fathers had on the development of our nation. I can explain the purposes of and problems with the Alien and Sedition Acts. I can recognize the use of states’ rights in the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions.

Election of 1796 – Adams wins

Power Struggles of John Adams Adams didn’t have the mandate that Washington did. –Barely 50% of the votes –Jefferson (opponent) was VP Jefferson had support of growing immigrant population. Adams wanted to secure his power as president.

Alien and Sedition Acts He passed the Alien & Sedition Acts. – Alien Acts allowed the government to deport or imprison any “alien” they thought was “dangerous”. – Sedition Act allowed the government to imprison anyone who said things about the government that the Federalists didn’t like. But say all you want about Jefferson!

VA and KY Resolutions Both Virginia and Kentucky thought they violated freedom of speech. So, they passed laws against the Acts (with help of Jefferson and Madison). This is an example of the balance of power between national and state governments.
