The Importance of Voting

“The difference between a democracy and a dictatorship is that in a democracy you vote first and take orders later; in a dictatorship you don't have to waste your time voting”. Charles Bukowski Questions: What is the difference between a democracy and a dictatorship? What dictatorships can you think of?

“The vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised by man for breaking down injustice and destroying the terrible walls which imprison men because they are different from other men.” Lyndon B. Johnson History of Voting How would you feel if you were unable to vote? Can you think of examples where people didn’t have a right to vote?

Voting “Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education.” Franklin D. Roosevelt What political parties can you think of? Who are their leaders? How could you find out more about democracy?

 “Elections belong to the people. It's their decision. If they decide to turn their back on the fire and burn their behinds, then they will just have to sit on their blisters.” Abraham Lincoln  Why is it important to vote?  What things would you like to see changed in school if you had the power?
