CLICK TO EDIT MASTER STYLE What does the Graduate College do? Administrative Functions –Oversees and confers degrees for 56 PhD programs and 102 Masters programs –Is not involved in oversight of several professional programs such as MBA, MD, DMD, PharmD, and others

What does the Graduate College do? Administrative Functions –Provides oversight for all graduate student related processes Admissions Program and curriculum changes Annual PhD Student Assessment Student Standing (GPA, time in program, vetting and processing of dismissals) Prelim/Qualifying Exam Completion and defense of dissertation/thesis Lead Staff members: Steve Kragon and Jim Kollenbroich

What does the Graduate College do? Administrative Functions –Collect data to help programs track: Student admissions and enrollment Student demographics Attrition Time to degree Student funding Student job placement Lead Staff member: Kevin Monahan

What does the Graduate College do? Administrative Functions –Manages and distributes tuition and fee waivers to departments/programs and for fellowship recipients. –Identifies external funding opportunities for students –Holds workshops to help students take advantage of external funding opportunities. Administrative Functions –Advises students and faculty on rules interpretation –Mediates student-mentor/program conflicts –Mediates final step in student grievance process after department and college processes are completed. Student Fellowships and Other Funding –University Fellowship –Abraham Lincoln Fellowship –Dean’s Fellowship –Chancellor’s Award for Interdisciplinary Research –Provost/Deiss Award –Diversifying Faculty in Illinois (IBHE) –Emergency Grants Lead Staff members: Jonathan Art, Laura Junker, Lunaire Ford

What does the Graduate College do? Skills and professional development workshops for graduate students –Practical skills for succeeding in grad school (ex: writing, research presentation, teaching) –Life Skills (ex: financial fitness, stress management) –Skills for securing a job after graduation (ex: CV/resume writing, interviewing, salary and benefits negotiation) Lead Staff members: Theresa Christenson-Cabellaro and Benn Williams

What does the Graduate College do? International TA (ITA) Program –State mandates that international students serving as teaching assistants must be provided training to reach a specific level of competency in the English language. –The ITA program provides both the competency testing and skills training for our international TAs. Lead Staff members: Lunaire Ford, Allen Bryson, Franciso Pĩna Initiatives to improve diversity in UIC graduate programs and the success of under- represented graduate students Undergraduate pipeline programs –Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) –Graduate Pathways to Success (GPS) Program Recruitment in partnership with programs Mentoring and community building for under-represented graduate students

Why you should become a member: You must be a Full Member of the Graduate College to: Serve as a graduate student dissertation/thesis advisor Chair student thesis/dissertation committees Be elected or appointed to the GC Executive Committee (tenured faculty only) Be elected or appointed to the GC Awards Committee Be eligible for the Faculty Mentoring Award

Who can become a Full Member –Tenure track faculty in departments with graduate programs –Tenure track faculty in departments with no graduate programs (like faculty in clinical departments in COM) must hold affiliate/adjunct appointments in a department with a graduate program –Full membership is indefinite, unless revoked for failure to responsibly train graduate students Graduate College Membership Lead Staff member: Jim Kollenbroich

Who can become an Associate Member –Non-tenure track clinical and research faculty –May serve as student advisors, but cannot chair a student dissertation/thesis committee –Associate membership is indefinite, unless revoked for failure to responsibly train graduate students Graduate College Membership Lead Staff member: Jim Kollenbroich

Who can become an Adjunct Member –Non-tenure track clinical and research faculty, as well as visiting professors, lecturers, post- docs and staff. –May serve on student dissertation/thesis committees –Adjunct membership lasts for three years and can be renewed Graduate College Membership Lead Staff member: Jim Kollenbroich A faculty member outside the university can become a Courtesy Member for one year.

How do you become a member –Nomination form is available on-line on the Graduate College website and is necessary for all levels of membership. –Form should be signed and submitted by department head or chair, and must be accompanied by nominee’s CV.
