Department Vision Graduates of the Oglala Lakota College Humanities and Social Science Department are able to reach their full potential as a result of their education which will ensure student success in: – High-quality post-secondary rigor in instruction; – A supportive teaching and learning environment; – Learning opportunities that promote assessed acquisition of knowledge and skills for personal and professional development for local Oglala community leadership; – Partnerships among students, educators, and the Oglala community that support life and career success; and – Integral cultural aspects of Oglala Lakota Wolakolkiciyapi.

Department Mission The Oglala Lakota College Humanities and Social Science Department will provide a well-rounded and rigorous education in the Arts, English, Social Sciences, and Communication for graduates to be successful in their local Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and Oglala communities by: Ensuring the steady progress of all students toward reaching their full potential; Exposing students to Oglala and world cultures, art, histories, and literature while integrating cultural aspects of Oglala Lakota Wolakolkiciyapi; Maintaining high expectations for students by way of updated assessment tools learned and utilized in the classroom; Supporting higher education on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and amongst Oglala communities by providing high-quality intellectual rigor and Oglala community-based programming; and Challenging students to develop ways of seeing and thinking about the world that go beyond everyday application.

Department Goals The undergraduate degrees in the Humanities and Social Science Department require knowledge and awareness of the following: High-quality post-secondary instruction that include forms of assessment testing and rubrics for students to meet learning criteria toward Baccalaureate and Associate Degree graduation; A supportive teaching and learning environment to experience and then repeat regularly in their own professional, personal lives affiliated with the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and Oglala communities; Learning opportunities that promote acquisition of knowledge and skills for personal and professional development and for Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and Oglala community leadership; and Partnerships among students, educators, professionals, and the community that support life and career success on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and amongst Oglala communities.

Syllabi Contact Faculty will provide an electronic copy of syllabi. You will be receiving a letter outlining what can and cannot be changed in the syllabus. You need to use the department approved syllabus, and you can’t use the department approved syllabus AND another syllabus. You can adapt some items in the department syllabus. Items that cannot be changed: – Course Description, Goals, Objectives, Basic policies and first five weeks of content as well as text books. Also, the main content cannot be deleted. For example major essays, speeches or assignments need to remain on the schedule but can be assigned on different dates. Items that can be changed: – Course schedule and some content AFTER the first five weeks. Adjunct instructors will submit their modified syllabus back to the contact faculty by end of week one (1).

Writing Rubric Departmental writing rubric is to be used for all writing assignments

Lakota Perspective Follow the Lakota values: – Respect, generosity, wisdom, fortitude, bravery, humility Practice listening and sharing (not authoritarian) Use Lakota materials when possible Bring Elder speakers and mentors to class when possible and when the topic fits class content. Reading and writing assignments can incorporate Lakota Perspective Use Treaty knowledge when appropriate and possible

Grade Entry Required to submit midterm grades in Jenzabar this semester (pass/fail) Final grades must be submitted via the grade entry portal (not gradebook) in Jenzabar Signed hard copies of final grades must be submitted to the registrar’s office.

Moodle Beginning Fall 2014, all syllabi and Individual Course Assessment Forms (ICAF’s) will be submitted in Moodle.
