10.3-Regulating the Cell Cycle Controls on Cell Division The cell cycle is controlled by regulatory proteins both inside and outside the cell. Cyclins.
 Made of certain proteins.  Directs the timing and sequence of events in the cell cycle.  If something goes wrong, Cells lose control of cell cycle.
Gene Expression Chapter 11. Gene Expression…Why? Your cells use the message contained in your genome (DNA) to produce several thousand different proteins.
 Abnormal growth of cells = a tumor  BENIGN = tumor that lacks the ability to spread to another area/ tissues  MALIGNANT = tumor that spreads to other.
Benign v. Malignant Vocabulary Neoplasm – a new and abnormal growth of tissue in some part of the body Benign – refers to a condition, tumor, or growth.
Cancer What is cancer? uncontrolled cell growth that leads to the formation of primary tumors cells that spread (metastasize) to other areas of the body.

Cancer vocabulary Cancer-a disorder In which some of the body’s own cells lose the ability to control growth Tumor-an abnormal mass of tissue that can live and produce itself Malignancy- a dangerous cancerous growth that sheds cells into body fluids and spreads to new locations to start cancer colonies Melanoma- an especially dangerous cancer of the pigmented cells of the skin Myeloma- a cancer originating in the cells of the bone marrow Lymphomas- cancer that arise in organs of the immune system Leukemia- cancer that arise in the blood cell making tissues Carcinogens- cancers that arise in the skin, body chamber lining, or glands Sarcomas- cancers that arise in the connective tissue cells Initiator- a carcinogen, an agent required to start the formation of cancer Mutation- a change in the cell’s genetic material Promoter- a substance that assists in the development of malignant tumors Benign- noncancerous Metastasized- a term meaning the cancer cells have migrated from one part of the body to another

How Cancer Develops Exposure to a carcinogen Entry of the initiator into the cell Change of the cell’s genetic material. The change may be a mutation Possible speeding up of cancer formation by a promoter Out-of-control multiplication of the cells Tumor or other malignancy formation

carcinoma Necrotic tumor
