Three Great Men Why I have chosen these three examples: 1.All “Church Fathers”, great writers/apologists/theologians 2.Geographical distribution indicative of Christianity c. 200AD 3.All connected in some way with heresies discussed last class 4.Representative of growing theological tension within the church 5.Their background to a great degree informs their theological approach

Geographical Distribution

Three Great Men Clement: 1.From Athens… (much in common w/ Justin) 2.Head of catechetical school in Alexandria, Egypt 3.Well versed in pagan philosophy and literature as well as the Bible 4.Embraces philosophy, but rejects gnosticism (OT Typology) (Excerpts) 5.Indicative of the emerging Alexandrian school of Theology Clement of Alexandria ( A.D.)

Three Great Men Tertullian: 1.From Carthage and reflect Roman pragmatism/conservatism 2.A Lawyer and exemplary orator 3.Wrote several works and spoke out against Gnostics and Marcionites 4.Rejects philosophy as destructive and unnecessary (read excerpt) 5.Fundamentalist in his approach, follows Montanus and is rejected as “heretic” Tertullian of Carthage ( A.D.)

Three Great Men In Conclusion: 1.There is increasing tension building in the church between the philosophical approach to theology (Alexandrian) and a traditional approach (Hellenistic Jewish) 2.By 200AD, humanity’s place in the Universe, Nature of the Trinity, and Dual Nature of Christ increasingly topics of interest 3.Next Week: Continued Persecution in 3 rd Century and the growth of the Church.
