KOLHAPUR DISTRICT AT A GLANCE AREA : 7620 sq.km. Blocks : 12 Corporations : 1 Municipal Concil : 9 Villages : 1217 Gram Pachayat : 1028 Population (2001): 35.15 Lakh

Total Population not having latrines was 31%

TSC OBJCTIVES Improvement in the general quality of life. Accelerate sanitation coverage in rural areas. It is a demand driven programme. People centered & community lead programme Promote hygiene education & sanitary habits among students. Encourage cost effective & appropriate technologies in sanitation. Eliminate open defecation. Minimize risk of contamination of water & Food.

CONSTRAINTS Large geographical area. Dense population. 10 blocks having hilly & interior areas. Defecation open 69 %. Not having mindset to built toilets. Many more people not having finance for construction Some were not having land Technological awareness.

Analysis of DATA At dist. Level District Water & Sanitation Commit implemented. Sanitation Survey was conducted in all GP in 2003 The division of families who were without toilets facilities is as below. A. Having land & funds but not having mentality - 49 % B. Having land but lacking funds. – 21% C. Having funds but no lands- 18% D. Neither having land nor having funds-12%

District Level STRATEGIES Community led & People centered . Demand driven approach. Alternate delivery mechanism adopted. Rural School Sanitation & hygiene education. Emphasis is on behavioral change. Emphasis on IEC

Small Hygiene Motivators (SWACHATA DOOT) Spread the message of need of toilets & cleanliness in the homes to maintain good hygienic condition.

Spark by Swacchata Doot 44 master trainers in turn trained 6526 teachers from different blocks of the district These 6526 teachers from different blocks of district propagated their knowledge to the students These activities resulted in creation of huge workforce of more than 1,00,000 students for TSC.

Innovative Activities In the year of January 2008 Special NSS camps were arranged in 82 villages & 4500 students participated NSS CAMP

‘GANDHIGIRI’ for sanitation All Gram Panchayt’s resulted have declared enforced fine for open defecation Around 7200 peoples fined durring this activity.

BANKING FINANCE FOR SANITATION LEAD BANK FOR KOLHAPUR Requested for disbursement of loan for latrine construction Over 5.95 crores distributed at village level from various bankers. Leading role played by Kolhapur district co-op. bank (KDCC) by implementing special pattern for BIO-GAS with toilet 22000 bio gas plants constriction

Support from different departments Gram panchayat from its own fund provided material for construction of latrine rather than giving money. Milk producers co-op. society provided funds at rural level. Co-operative sugar factories - 21 For workers, farmers receiving incentive for construction of latrine. Construction of latrine more than 35,000

SHG-INVOLVEMENT Total SHG = 46483 SHGs Linked With Bank = 36437 On the traditional days SHG member come together for Haldi-Kumkum programme. SHG members visited families & encourage family for built toilet.

SHG-INVOLVEMENT 15,000 Involved for Sanitation Survey & for promotion of sanitation at village level. Nirmal SHG becomes milestone in Involvement of SHG

Sant Gadgebaba Campaign ‘Kambalwadi’ takes first prize at state level campaign. Provides sanitation background in district. Durring last 10 years Kolhapur district having major prizes in campaign in various component like solid liquid waste management. 155 GPs recived Sant Gadgebaba Prize.

ROLE OF MEDIA Local Magazine IEC BORD

IEC of low cost sanitation 3 Pamphlets published containing knowledge of Low cost latrine & awareness. Material obtained from UNICEF has been circulated to village level.

WERE SET AT EVERY BLOCK, HAVING RURAL SANITARY MART WERE SET AT EVERY BLOCK, HAVING TWO RSM AT EACH WITH TOTAL INVESTMENT OF Rs. 25.5 LAKHS Total RSM – 24 in district

School & Anganwadi Sanitation ACHIEVEMENT Total Schools – 1880 Total Schools Toilets – 1880 Total Anganwadis – 3167 Total Anganwadis Toilets – 3167 Schools & Anganwadis have not only built toilet but started using it regularly.

ACHIEVEMENT (2011) In campaign period around 3,35,051 toilet constructed and are being use. Rs. 167 crores sanitation infrastructure created.

CAMPAIGN ACHIEVEMENT (2011) 984 villages awarded : Nirmal Gram Puraskar 5 Blocks awarded : Nirmal Gram Puraskar Till date coverage of 100% School toilets. Till date coverage of 100% Anganwadi toilets.
