Violence Prevention By: Maggie Froelich & Mihir Patel Grades 2-4 Activity Duration :15 minutes

InTASC Standard Standard #5: Application of Content The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues. Name of Artifact: Health/PE lesson Plan Date: March 8, 2015 Course: EDUC 240 Physical and Health Education for Elementary Teachers Description: This is a lesson plan covering the topic of violence prevention. You will find the correct National Standards, Indiana Academic Standards, and measurable objectives. There are a total of two activities to help understand the concept. Also included is accommodations that may need to be made. Rational: To document my understanding of InTASC Standard 5, Application of Content, I have selected to include my health/PE lesson plan because it shows how a teacher connects concepts using different perspectives to engage learners. This involves critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to real world experiences.

National Health Education Standards  Standard 4: Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.

Indiana Health & PE Academic Standards  Demonstrate respect and compassion for students with individual differences.  Encourage classmates who demonstrate difficulty with skill performance.

Student Objectives  Demonstrate an argument, and infer how you could have made the situation better.  Experiment with positive language.  Develop a list of what you think a bully is.

Materials Needed  Take the Pledge Certificate  Writing utensil  Paper  Students  An enclosed room

Preparation  Print out Take the Pledge certificates  Think about possible scenarios involving violence  Make a list of positive language

Introductory Activity  Introduce both activities.  You will be role playing situations where it could become violent, then we will determine how else it could have played out.  Then we will be discussing what bullying is and then take a pledge

Lesson Activities  Role Play – learn positive ways to deal with anger  Count off by 2’s  Come up with an argument that may lead to violence  Act it out  Discuss other ways the situation could have been handled in a positive manner  Take the Pledge – put a stop to bullying   Complete the certificate

Closing Activity  What is your take away?  What are positive words we can use when there is a disagreement?  What can you do if you see someone else being bullied?  What does this pledge mean?

Assessment of Activities  To assess the students understanding of violence prevention we will ask high level thinking questions.  Listen to their conversations  Listen to their questions

Success for All Accommodations You can print out an example situation if you have a set of students who cannot speak If a student cannot write their own name they may also fill the certificate out online

Safety Concerns  A student may go to far in the role playing  Must monitor the activity closely  Monitor the language that is used
