A uthor P lace and Time P rior Knowledge A udience R eason T he Main Idea S ignificance

 The “Author”, “Place and Time”, “Audience”, and “Reason” prompts encourage the student to consider the usefulness of the document as a piece of evidence  The “Prior Knowledge” and “The Main Idea” prompts encourage the student to focus on the message of the primary source.  The “Significance” prompt encourages students to ask, “after all this analysis, how useful if the primary sources as evidence in the argument I am trying to construct?”

Another Strategy  SOAPS – Subject, Occasion, Audience, Purpose, and Speaker  APPARTS is another technique that promotes improved primary source analysis. All these techniques encourage a deeper understanding of primary sources.

So…  Of all the info you look at in AP PARTS, you must determine what info is more significant to answer the DBQ

Example 1:  Prompt: Explain the end result of last night’s football game.

Doc 1  Tom Robard, Newspaper Reporter, The Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel  The annual Ely – Dillard football game ended in dramatic fashion when Donnell Wilson caught the game winning touchdown pass as time expired. Wilson made a leaping catch and landed safely in the end zone capping an improbable come from behind win for the Tigers.  (note: most high school game results are phoned into the newspaper sports desk)

Doc 2  Donnell Wilson, Ely Wide Receiver who caught the winning pass  Did you see that catch?! I mean it was great! Man I knew I had it! That D-back was nothing! I ran right by him and just reached out and pulled it in. Focus, real focus!! We’re number 1!

Doc 3  Clayton Sheffield, Offensive Coach, Ely High School  Great catch! Unbelievable! Donnell has heat and quit in him. When it mattered I knew he would come through. He’s tough, a real gamer! I had the team focused. We were ready to play. Never a doubt!

Doc 4  Demetrius Johnson, Defensive back who covered Donnell, Dillard HS  We were robbed. That guy never caught the ball, he was lying there on the ground and the ball fell in his hands. He pushed me and the ref never saw nothing. Ely is nothing but a bunch of cheats!

Doc 5  Mark Burton, Defensive Coach, Dillard HS  What can I say? Demetrius played him real tight. Ely ended up on the ground with the ball and the touchdown. Some nights you just arent’ lucky, some you are.

Example 2:  Prompt: Analyze one of the social issues of Africa. Explain in detail what the issue is and give at least one example. Summarize varying view points about the issue and critique the points of view.
