Banquo is suspicious of Macbeth Thinks Macbeth killed the king to benefit himself (a cheap underhanded trick) Macbeth realises Banquo’s suspicion and hired 3 murderers to kill Banquo Scared that Banquo will reveal the truth about Macbeth

The crown will be taken away from of someone not in his family (Banquo’s kids) “For Banquo’s issue have I filled my mind; For them the gracious Duncan have I murder’d; Put rancours in the vessel of my peace only for them; and mine eternal jewel” – line Tries to convince the murderers that Banquo’s death is deserved “Do you find your patience so predominant in your nature that you can let this go?” -line Macbeth Macbeth bribes them with a special status change

Develops Character- This scene emphasises the corruption Macbeth has been tainted with. The murder of his best friend suggested and acted upon without the influence of his wife it is clear now this has become ingrained into his character. Suspense/Tension- This scene creates tension through Dramatic Irony. Both us (the viewers) and Macbeth are well aware that Macbeth is going to attempt a murder on to Banquo

Line 1: Fulfills the prophecy that the witches made that Macbeth killed the king to become the new king. Sets up plot, develops character, tying up plot. (Soliloquy) “Thou hast it now: King, Cawdor, Glamis”

Line 22: Banquo will be leaving the castle with his son. We also know Banquo has suspicions of Macbeth. This new information gives us suspense and the necessary environment for an event to occur. (New information) “In this day's council; but we'll take to- morrow”

Line 60: Macbeth’s ambitions drive him towards being king, to maintain this kingship he must maintain the secrecy in his evil deeds. This of course is not possible with the threat of Banquo's suspicion lurking, Banquo being wise enough to suspect Macbeth. “Upon my head they placed a fruitless crown, and put a barren scepter in my gripe, Thence to be wrench'd with an unlineal hand, No son of mine succeeding.”

Line 80 Macbeth fears that his position as king is in jeopardy. Macbeth has a fear of Banquo being superior as a person. Macbeth suspects that Banquo has grown suspicious of him “How you were borne in hand, how cross'd, the instruments, who wrought with them, and all things else that might, to half a soul and to a notion crazed, say "Thus did Banquo. "”

In “The Lion King”, Scar tries to murder Simba by hiring the hyenas after Mufasa’s death.
