Elisa: Round character She is the main character, under goes a change, emotionally. Tinker: Flat This man plays a small role. His presence helps awaken the feelings within Elisa. Henry: Flat Henry is the husband, he is practical and has no use for impractical things such as beauty or emotions Scotty: Very Flat Ranch hand, plays no major role. CHARACTERS

STYLE  STEINBECK DOESN’T GET EMOTIONAL OR TOUCHY-FEELY.  USES FEW WORDS TO CRAM IN A LOT OF MEANING/ DEPTH  VERY DESCRIPTIVE, BUT GETS RIGHT TO THE POINT.

TONE NEUTRALDISTANTWISTFUL  READER COMES TO THEIR OWN CONCLUSIONS  LOTS OF SYMBOLS/ DEEPER MEANINGS

SYMBOLS Flowers: Beauty The flowers are used several times throughout the story to symbolize other meanings. Conversation about flowers flowers on the road Chicken Wire Fence: separates/ isolates her Symbolizes her feelings of being fenced in

PSYCHOLOGICAL CRITICISM  How readers can relate to Elisa  Reason behind the character’s behavior

STEINBECK AND OATES  WOMEN AS MAIN CHARACTERS  ACTING AS SOCIETY EXPECTS  SYMBOLS PLAY A BIG ROLE (flowers & symbols of Devil)
