WHAT IS A FLOOR PLAN? A floor plan is a technical drawing of a building with the roof removed as seen from above. The building has been cut by an imaginary line or slice on a floor plan drawing (the cutting plane ) normally 4 feet above the finished floor.

DRAWING A FLOOR PLAN 1. Examine dimensions of drawing/design and appropriate scale. 2. Decide on paper size for drawing. 3. Obtain tools needed for drafting (T-Square, Triangle, Pencil, Architectural Scale, etc.). 4. Align paper with edge of desk/drafting board using a T-Square. 5. Tape paper to drawing surface (desk, drafting board) at the corners. 6. Draw Border and Title Block based on dimensions.

DRAWING A FLOOR PLAN 7. Add text to Title Block. 8. Determine center of drawing space. 9. Draw overall shape of building centered in drawing space based on its dimensions. 10. Draw exterior walls based on dimensions. 11. Draw interior walls based on dimensions (thickness and location). 12. Draw openings within walls for doors and windows based on dimensions.

DRAWING A FLOOR PLAN 13. Draw all doors and windows based on dimensions. 14. Draw all furnishings, fixtures, appliances, equipment, etc. based on dimensions. 15. Draw North Arrow and Drawing Title symbol with construction lines for text. 16. Add text for Drawing Title and Scale using construction lines. 17. Erase guidelines. 18. Adjust line weights for the border, title block, and objects cut by cutting plane.

DRAWING A FLOOR PLAN 19. Check for and erase all stray marks on paper. 20. Remove paper from drawing surface by carefully peeling tape from the corners of the paper.
