Hot Puddings: „Apple Brown Betty“

Ingredients: serves 6 50g fresh white breadcrumbs 175g brown sugar 2,5ml ground cinnamon 1,25ml ground cloves 1,25ml grated nulmeg 50g butter 1kg cooking apples juice of 1 lemon 25g finely chopped walnuts cream or ice cream to serve

Steps 1 an 2 of 4 1.Preheat the grill. Spread out the breadcrumbs on a baking sheet and toast under the grill until golden, stirring frequently to colour them evenly. Set aside. Preheat the oven to 190°C/ 375°F/Gas5. Butter a large deep ovenproof dish. 2.Mix the sugar with the cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Cut the butter into tiny pieces, then set aside. Peel, core and slice the apples. Toss immediately with the lemon juice to prevent the apple slices from turning brown.

Steps 3 and 4 3.Sprinkle 30-40ml of breadcrumbs into the prepared dish. Cover with one third of the sugar and spice mixture. Add another layer of breadcrumbs and dot with one third of the butter. Repeat the layer two more times, ending with a layer of breadcrumbs. Sprinkle with the nuts, and dot with the remaining butter. 4.Bake for minutes, until the apples are tender and the top is golden brown. Serve warm with cream or ice cream, if you like.
