 East Midlands - centre of the ‘Industrial revolution’  FACT : PRIDE - P artnership to R egenerate through I nnovative D evelopment the E nvironment of Derby Lead to the contamination of many sites Regeneration of sites needed

Old gas works and land fill site Eastern side of site – Most highly contaminated Old railway works Western side of site – lower levels of contamination, consists of old gravel pits and engineering works The site is bounded to the North and East by the River Derwent

Include tars, oils, phenols, heavy metals, ammonia, boron and low level radioactive materials (below landfill) Making the solution of dig and replace impractical and uncommercial Requires an environmentally robust remediation strategy

 Longest and largest elevation area of any similar type wall in the UK  3km long  5-10m deep  HDPE membrane  Maximum permeability to water of 1x10-8 m/sec Collapse-syndrome.php

 A 650mm thick high-permeability layer of graded stone  Protects surface from contaminants from the action of capillary rise  Encourages infiltration through the landfill  Methane gas is produced from municipal refuse tip  The trench encircled the landfill to prevent gases migrating beyond  Venting pipes release methane gas safely into the atmosphere

 Two on site fully engineered waste repositories  House the total of 93,015m 3 of contaminated waste  Located on the south side of the site  Leachate drainage system extracts and collects contaminated ground water  Collected water is pumped to an on site ground water treatment plant  Water cleaned and treated

 Shortfall of 171,000m 3 of material  PFA used environmentally sustainable and cost effective  Successful in raising ground and construction of waste repositories  Construction of a flood bund  Raising the general level of the site
