I. 1st Commandment
Ancient Israel 1. The ancient Jewish people believed there were many gods. Yahweh, their god, was the best. I. 1 st Commandment A.

What it means 1. God should be our #1 priority at the center of our life. Puts everything else in the right place. I. 1 st Commandment B.
Sins against it 1. Idolatry- worshiping something other than God. The golden calf I. 1 st Commandment C.
Sins against it 2. Polytheism- worshiping more than one God. Many ancient societies are polytheistic I. 1 st Commandment C.
Sins against it 3. Divination- trying to tell the future using false means. Ex: Horoscopes, waking the dead, magic-8 balls. I. 1 st Commandment C.
Sins against it 4. Sorcery- taming occult powers for your own power. More than just magic tricks. I. 1 st Commandment C.
Sins against it 5. Superstition- trusting “lucky” rituals or omens rather than God. I. 1 st Commandment C.
Sins against it 6. Tempting God- putting God to the test. I. 1 st Commandment C.
Sins against it 7. Sacrilege- treating Sacraments or holy things with disrespect. Ex: graffiti on a Church I. 1 st Commandment C.
Sins against it 8. Atheism- denying God’s existence. Ex: Ideals of socialism deny God’s existence. I. 1 st Commandment C.
Sins against it 9. Pride Kind of like making a god out of yourself. I. 1 st Commandment C.
Living this Commandment 1. You need to pray every day. Start with 5-10 minutes. Find what works best for you. I. 1 st Commandment D.
Living this Commandment 2. Pray because you want to, not because you have to! I. 1 st Commandment D.
Living this Commandment 3. Watch your obsessions. You shouldn’t obsess over anything. I. 1 st Commandment D.
II. 2nd Commandment
Ancient Israel 1. God’s name, Yahweh, was so holy it was rarely spoken or written. Abbreviated YHWH II. 2 nd Commandment A.
Ancient Israel 2. People would call God Adonai, or “Lord” to avoid using God’s name. II. 2 nd Commandment A.
Ancient Israel 3. Could be put to death for insulting God’s name Part of why they wanted to kill Jesus II. 2 nd Commandment A.
What it means 1. Respect the gift of language that God has given us, and use is for good. II. 2 nd Commandment B.
Sins against it 1. Blasphemy- thoughts or words that make fun of or disrespect God. Ex: Saying God’s name in vain II. 2 nd Commandment C.
Sins against it 2. Perjury- lying under oath. Asking God to witness a lie. II. 2 nd Commandment C.
Sins against it 3. Profanity- speaking curse words. II. 2 nd Commandment C.
Sins against it 4. Cursing- calling on God to harm another person. II. 2 nd Commandment C.
Living this Commandment 1. Break the bad habit of swearing and OMGing. It can get you in trouble in a lot of places. II. 2 nd Commandment D.
Living this Commandment 2. Respect the power of all of your words. II. 2 nd Commandment D.
Living this Commandment 3. Resist spreading and listening to gossip and negative talk. II. 2 nd Commandment D.
III. 3rd Commandment
Ancient Israel 1. Sabbath- Saturday, which was a holy day to the Jewish people. Christians celebrate this Sunday because Jesus rose from the dead. III. 3 rd Commandment A.
Ancient Israel 2. You couldn’t do any work, or even cook on Sabbath All preparations finished the day before. III. 3 rd Commandment A.
Ancient Israel 3. Jesus even got into trouble for breaking this rule Jesus: “Sabbath is for man, not man for the Sabbath.” III. 3 rd Commandment A.
What it means 1. For Catholics, the Eucharist (Mass) is the most important Sacrament. III. 3 nd Commandment B.
What it means 2. Catholics are required to attend mass every Sunday, and on all Holy Days of Obligation. III. 3 nd Commandment B.

Holy Days of Obligation 2. Mary, Mother of God- Celebrates the Church declaring that Mary is the Mother of God. January 1 III. 3 rd Commandment C.

Living this Commandment 1. Go to Church every Sunday. Make it your priority. III. 3 rd Commandment D.

Living this Commandment 3. Balance your schedules. Do not over-book yourself. Be a “human being”, not just a “human doing”. III. 3 rd Commandment D.
