Help Students with English as a Second Language  E xplain vocabulary  (teachers should explain words that are hard in the textbook)  T eachers should try to use simple words.  S ometimes accents prevent students form understanding the language. For example, the teachers could write the words on the board to help them.

Continued…  I f a teacher doesn’t speak Spanish or the language that the students speak, ask other students who does to help them.

TeachersNeedto bePrepared Teachers Need to be Prepared  M ake the students realize that you know what you are talking about  B e prepare to answer questions  S tudents expect teachers to teach them and help them  E xample of what the teacher should not do:  Teacher starts to do a problem, cannot finish it, just stops doing it and goes to the other problem

Teachers Should be Patient  B e able to say things in a different way  D o the problems step-by-step without skipping steps because most of the books miss steps. These may be the important steps to understand the problem  D o not show your frustration to the students.

Make Students Feel Secure and Confident in the Class (all settings)  D on’t embarrass a student in front of the class ( Never announce personal scores.)  D on’t say “You should already know this” when students ask a question.  C reate an environment where students don’t feel intimidated.  B e available to students If teachers help students feel confident and secure, students are more likely to approach them.

What Should Teachers Do About Disruptive Students?  A ttempt to motivate students to become involved in the class  C hit- C hat amongst students; ask them if they have a question. If this don’t work, then try to do the extreme (ask those kind of students to leave)
