What is Drancy? Drancy was a camp where any Jews were held until they were taken to death camps such as Auschwitz. It is located in Paris, France and was used by 65,000 Jews. 63,000 people were later murdered (6,000 children) meaning that only 2,000 people survived when the camp was liberated on 17 th August 1944 by Allied Forces.

When did it start? On the next slide is a video about how Drancy Transition Camp began and what it was used for and how people were treated there before they were moved to Death Camps such as Auschwitz

Please Note: Because this is a long clip, I would advise watching it from 2:15- 4:45. You will also need to be connected to the internet to watch this clip.

Why did it start? When Hitler came to power he promised that he would stop the embarrassment from losing WW1, when France surrendered to the Nazis’ in 1940 he had done just that. He made the French Government sign the Armistice in the same place where the Germans had to sign their treaty after WW1. Now that Hitler had control of France he wanted to embarrass them- just like France did to them. He made the French government and French people follow Nazi regimes, like concentration camps and rounding up Jews. On the next slide is a clip of Paris it has Nazi flags posters and SS officers everywhere- just like Germany.

How were people transported to Auschwitz? Jews were collected and sent on trains which travelled from Paris, through Drancy and then Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and then to Poland. There were 5 other trains that went to Auschwitz and even more that led to other death camps. The trains travelled through as many Concentration Camps as possible. Trains could take thousands at a time
