Physical Abuse #9 Any unwanted contact with the other person’s body. physical abuse does not have to leave a mark or a bruise. legally, it is called battery. Verbal/Emotional Abuse #10 Saying or doing something to another person that causes that person to be afraid and/or have lower self-esteem. Trying to manipulate or control another person’s feelings or behaviors. This can include online posts or digital communications designed to threaten, harass, or embarrass. Threatening to commit suicide Making unwanted comments or sending unwanted messages of sexual nature to the person. Insulting the person or his/her family or friends Embarrassing the person in front of others Intimidating the person Telling the person what to do Spreading negative rumors about the person Stalking Making racial, ethnic, or religious slurs about the person he/she care for Name Calling Making the person feel guilty Yelling or Screaming Put Downs

It is against the law and should be reported immediately! Sexual Abuse #11 Any sexual contact forced upon a victim. It occurs when a person is forced to participate in a sexual act against his or her will. The abuser is often someone the victim knows and trusts. Often the sexual abuser of children and teens is an adult family member or friend. Abuses don’t always use physical force. They persuade, bribe, trick or bully the victims. Sexual harassment is a type of sexual abuse. It is when uninvited and unwelcome sexual contact is directed at a person. It includes words, touching, jokes, looks, notes, or gestures with a sexual meaning. It is against the law and should be reported immediately!

Sexual abuse signs and symptoms: Acting out in an inappropriate sexual way Nightmares, sleeping problems Becoming withdrawn or very clingy Becoming unusually secretive Sudden unexplained personality changes, mood swings and seeming insecure Regressing to younger behaviors, e.g. bedwetting Unaccountable fear of particular places or people Outburst of anger Changes in eating habits Self-harm (cutting, burning or other harmful activities) Running away Not wanting to be alone with a particular person #11

Protect Yourself on Dates #12 *Know who the person is, where you are going, and what you will be doing. *Make sure friends and family know this information too. *Don’t be alone with your date. *Go on dates in public places. *Go on double dates or group dates. *Do not accept drugs or alcohol. *Do not allow anyone to have an opportunity to put drugs in your beverage. *Be wary of meeting anyone on the Internet. *Know where a phone is at all times. *Set limits, and communicate these limits clearly and firmly ahead of time.

Children & Sexual Abuse A form of child abuse in which an adult or older adolescent uses a child for sexual stimulation. This can include: Touching Sexual intercourse Exposure Voyeurism Child pornography Forcing a child to engage in sex with others

Neglect #14 The failure to meet the basic physical and emotional needs of a person. It includes: withholding food, clothing, housing, love, encouragement or affection. Neglect causes physical and emotional harm. It is a type of abuse and against the law.

Neglect signs and symptoms: Poor growth or weight gain Poor hygiene Lack of clothing or supplies to meet physical needs Taking food or money without permission Eating a lot in one sitting or hiding food for later Poor record of school attendance Lack of appropriate attention for medical, dental or psychological problems, even though the parents have been notified Emotional swings that are inappropriate or out of context to the situation Indifference #14

What is Domestic Abuse? #15 Domestic abuse is a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner. It can be physical, sexual, emotional, economic, or psychological.

Domestic Abuse Did You Know? #16 Did You Know? Between three and four million women are battered each year. 85%–95% of all victims are female. More than 1,750,000 workdays are lost each year due to domestic violence. Each year, an estimated 3.3 million children witness their mothers or female caretakers being abused. More Facts About Domestic Violence This year, about 450,000 women will be beaten between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. Battering is the single largest cause of injury to women in the United States.  Nearly 50 percent of abusive husbands batter their wives when they are pregnant, making them 4 times more likely to bear infants of low birth weight.  More than half of all homeless women are on the street because they are fleeing domestic violence.  Last year, the number of women abused by their husbands was greater than the number of women who got married.
