Image Storage and Archive

Current problems and goals of ‘Archive Project ‘ Images/image sets impossible to find No metadata, few notes for support Data is difficult to reuse Can’t assess current state of data, time of analysis/reduction, condition of product Non-unique filenames Inconsistent naming ‘System’ happened without planning

Goals of Archive Project Improve accessibility and usability of data Enforce future discipline with data collection Establish a ‘responsible party’ for data archive Use current established protocols and methods, don’t reinvent the wheel (or file system)

Reference Documents Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (FGDC-STD ) Standard for Geospatial Dataset File Naming (USDA SCMI-Std ) Manual for Managing Geospatial Datasets in Service Centers (USDAAFY UAO- SCM GIS Standard Operating Procedures on Incidents (NWCG PMS936/NFES 2809)

Reference Documents Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (FGDC-STD ) – This standard uses ANSI and other standards Identification Data Quality Spatial data organization Spatial reference information Entity and attribute information Distribution information Metadata reference information

Reference Documents Standard for Geospatial Dataset File Naming (USDA SCMI-Std ) – Organizes ‘a group of similar spatial phenomena in a geospatial dataset category – 30 character filenames (ISO 9660 Level 2, Mode 1 for CD-ROM writing) – This standard allows for directory-based ancillary files according to a standard scheme – Applicable for our data?

Path forward-Questions to answer Assimilate the relevant documents and apply past experience to our situation File naming conventions vs. directory structure vs. database Required datasets, Optional map products, optional datasets (ancillary information) Specific implementation requirements (database vs. plain text vs. ML)
