Essential in understanding of East of Eden

March 21 Reading time-Vocabology About Cain and Abel

Steinbeck states “As I went into the story [East of Eden] more deeply, I began to realize that without this story [of Cain and Abel] – or rather the sense of it – psychiatrists would have nothing to do. In other words this one story is the basis of all human neurosis - and if you take the fall along with it, you have the total of psychic troubles that can happen to a human.”

So what is the story about? Am I my brother’s keeper? We are all descendants of Cain. What choices do we have?

According to the Bible Cain was the first murderer in history. He committed a sin not only against God, but also against another human. What was Cain’s motivation?

Cain felt unloved Although the Bible gives no reason for why God chooses Abel’s sacrifice over Cain’s, Cain’s violence is sparked by anger at the rejection of his gift, and jealousy and resentment toward his brother. As the result, not only does he kill but, he lies. As punishment, he is condemned to till the ground fruitlessly and to be “a restless wanderer.” His mark is not a curse, but a protective sign of God’s enduring care.

Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

We are all descendants of Cain Cain (in all his wanderings) still had free will to conquer his basic instincts. He could choose right from wrong. “Sin is crouching at the door hungry to get you. You can still master him,” God had told him. We all are descendants of Cain. We all have free will. We possess the free will to struggle between good and evil within us. Condemned by either nature or nurture to be one way or another we all create our own destinies by choosing between virtue and vice.

What about this? Predestination: Fate

Question - React? Does man really have choice or is his life predestined?

The story of Cain and Abel And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bore Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord. And she again bore his brother Abel.

And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering

But unto Cain and to his offering, he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door, and unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass,—when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

The lie And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not… Am I my brother's keeper?

God’s response And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground. And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand; When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.

Cain said… And Cain said unto the Lord, My punishment is greater than I can bear. Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.

And the Lord said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the Lord set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.

And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

Question: What do you think is meant by the mark of Cain?

What to watch for Humans are locked in a net of good and evil…We have only one story. All novels, all poetry, are built on a never-ending contest within ourselves of good and evil. Evil constantly re-spawns, but good is venerable as nothing else in the world. (Steinbeck)
