Primeros Pasos-7 mins Take out a piece of paper. Put your name at the top. Write “Apuntes-Why learn Spanish” (notes) beneath that. Answer the following questions in complete sentences 1) Why do you think it’s important to learn a foreign language? 2) Do you think it is possible for someone to get smarter over time? Why or why not? !Buenos días sabios! Buenos días Srta Cottongim. ?Están listos a aprender? !Sí Sí Sí!

Objetivos-3 mins Everyday we will have objectives for class. They will start with Scholar Will Be Able To-SWBAT. SWBAT list 3 reasons why studying Spanish benefits them SWBAT list 2 ways to improve their Spanish speaking abilities SWBAT translate simple introduction phrases

Why learn Spanish? 10 mins 1.Communicate with over 470 million Spanish speakers worldwide and 1,173,327 in New Orleans (6.6%) Spanish is the primary language of 20 countries worldwide. It is estimated that the combined total number of Spanish speakers is between 470 and 500 million, making it the second most widely spoken language in terms of native speakers. If something is underlined, it needs to be written in your notes.

Why learn Spanish? 2. Learning a language makes you smarter. Intelligence is malleable. This means it can be changed. Your brain is like a muscle. The more you exercise it and learn new things, the smarter you become. Once you learn one language it is much easier to learn others. If something is underlined, it needs to be written in your notes.

Why learn Spanish? 3. Use Spanish to improve your employment and earning potential. Make more money! In the US alone, bilinguals make between 5-20% more per hour than unilingual people. Using an average salary of $50,000 per year, that would translate to $2,600- $10,400 more per year.

Why learn Spanish? 4. Use Spanish to travel the world!

Stop and jot! -5mins Which of these reasons to learn Spanish most appeals to you? Write a complete sentence in your notes. I want to learn Spanish because… Share with your partner.

How do I get better at learning a language?-10 mins A foreign language course is different from any other course you have taken; you must study every day. You can’t study for the course only on TT or MWF or Sunday night and expect to do well or come close to learning the language. If something is underlined, it needs to be written in your notes.

How do I get better at learning a language? Use flash cards! Make your own. Write phrases rather than isolated words. Study selectively by putting aside the cards you’ve recited correctly five times in a row. Shuffle the pack frequently. Distribute your practice time. For example, it is better to study your cards for ten minutes at a stretch six different times than to study them for one hour straight. If something is underlined, it needs to be written in your notes.

How do I get better at learning a language? Immerse yourself in the language Listen to music in the foreign language (107.5FM). Watch movies in English with Spanish subtitles or better yet watch it in Spanish with Spanish subtitles. Talk to your Spanish speaking classmates. Studies have shown that extraverts (or unreserved and outgoing people) acquire a second language better than introverts (or shy people). If something is underlined, it needs to be written in your notes.

Learning Styles- 3mins Visual: Learn better when they can see the material Auditory: Learn better when they can hear the material Tactile: Learn better when they can touch and interact with the material

Two Scenarios Which one is you? Scenario one: You lie on the floor, with the radio on, munching a snack while you read your English Assignment. Scenario Two: You sit at a desk, in a quiet room to read your English assignment. What distracts you? Study smarter, not harder!

Identify your learning style! -15 mins Take the Quiz! Write numbers 1-24 on your paper Read each question and write ‘Often’, ‘Sometimes’ or ‘Seldom’ next to each number.

Identify your learning style!-15 mins Grade it! Make 3 columns V, A, T OFTEN = 5 POINTS SOMETIMES = 3 POINTS SELDOM = 1 POINT

Analysis-5 mins Stop and Jot: What is your learning style? I am a __________ learner. What ways can you study smarter, not harder? I should __________________ to learn faster.
