There are many perspectives on events in history. There were two main perspectives about who caused the Whitman massacre. One point of view was from the white man and the other is from the Cayuse Indian. Both perspectives leading up to and beyond the Whitman massacre are important. I will begin with the white mans perspective and follow with the Cayuse Indians perspective.

According to Washington Our Home in 1831 four Indian men traveled to St. Louis to talk to William Clark. They asked if he could send missionaries. The missionaries started heading to the Northwest because the Indians wanted to learn about their beliefs.

According to the article the Cayuse War in 1836 Marcus and Narssica Whitman started the Waiillatpu mission. About seven miles west of what is now called Walla Walla. They brought many diseases with them. Missionaries tried to help them farm, and teach the white mans religion, raise animals, grow crops, and make clothes out of wool.

In 1842 the pioneers started traveling on the Oregon Trail. The Oregon Trail brought many settlers to Oregon Country. The mission was a stopping and resting point for settlers.

In 1847 the missionaries were helping the Indians by giving them medicine if they were sick. Then Indians started dying.

According to the article the Cayuse Attack the Whitman's were trying to help the Indians by giving them medicine if they were sick. Then, one day the Cayuse Indians attacked the mission. They started to kill anyone who got in there way.

But the indians perspective is much different than the white mans perspective According to Washington Our Home in 1831 four Indian men asked William Clark to send missionaries so, they could understand the white man’s way of life. And only believe in one God.

In 1836 the Whitman’s came and built a mission. The missionaries were trying to convert their way of life. The missionaries were trying to make them believe in one God. He Indians did not like it they thought the missionaries had to many rules.

In 1842 the missionaries started traveling they also brought diseases with them. When they got there the Indians thought Dr. Whitman was trying to kill them with the medicine.

According to the Cayuse attack article, in 1847 the Cayuse Indians attacked the mission the Indians took hostages.

According to the Cayuse War article. The Indians killed Dr. Whitman which signaled that they could kill anyone who got in their way.

I think the Indians and white man are both at fault because the medicine Dr. Whitman was giving the Indians killed them, and the Indians killed Dr. Whitman so, they are both at fault.
