Academic Writing Writing done while at school Essay: start with topic statement that outline the main points Then supporting paragraphs.

Technical Comm. Is a generic term for all written and oral comm. Done on the job. Some times referred to as: Tech. writing Professional writing Business writing Occupational writing.

Academic writing features Purpose: Demonstrate what you know about the topic to justify a grade. Your knowledge of topic: is less than your teacher. Audience: the teacher who requested and will evaluate it. Criteria for evaluation: Depth, Logic, Clarity, Unity, grammar. Statistical & graphical support: Sometimes used to explain and persuade

Technical writing Features Purpose: On job projects, persuading customers …. Your knowledge of topic: usually greater than that of the reader. Audience: Often several people with differing technical background. Criteria for evaluation: Clear & simple organization of ideas, in a format that meets the needs of a busy reader. Statistical & graphical support: Frequently used to explain existing conditions and to present alternative course of action.

Has a particular role on the job Only Aims to display your knowledge Features Contrasted Has a particular role on the job Only Aims to display your knowledge Conveying information by an informed writer to uninformed reader Done by a student as a learner to a teacher as a source of knowledge. Is read by many readers Aims to satisfy one reader.
