5.5.1 Plan of Operation 1 Guidelines for Implementation UPA Package 5, Module 5

5.5.1 Plan of Operation 2 Techniques Techniques used in plans of operation SDA-Matrix Flow Charts Critical Path Method (CPM) Gantt Charts

5.5.1 Plan of Operation 3 Critical Path Method Elements Nodes represent events before an activity starts or when it ends. The number is the label of the event. The earliest starting time (EST) is normally given in months in the left low quarter (3), the latest starting time (LST) in the right low quarter (6). Source: Delp et al, 1977

5.5.1 Plan of Operation 4 Critical Path Method A5A5 0 The arrow represents the activity; it is labelled with letters (compare the list of activities). The number gives the duration of the activities in months. Dummy activities have duration of 0 and no label. Source: Delp et al, 1977

5.5.1 Plan of Operation 5 Flowchart Identify major processes and decisions Break up each process into sub-processes and decisions Identify additional processes and decisions Examine decision points and sequences Is a more detailed flowchart needed? Redraw flowchart (if necessary) to clarify Flowchart is complete A NO NOT SURE YES Need to analyse complex process Construct sequences of processes and decisions Trial flowcharts complete A Is the sequential flow logically consistent?
