TANZANIA METEOROLOGICAL AGENCY OWNS AND MAINTAINS TWO PORT METEOROLOGICAL OFFICES AT THE DAR ES SALAAM HARBOR WHICH IS THE MAIN GATEWAY TO TANZANIA AND MANY LAND LOCKED COUNTRIES WHICH INCLUDE MALAWI,ZAMBIA,UGANDA,BURUNDI AND RWANDA

THE FIRST ONE CALLED THE OLD PORT MET OFFICE WAS OPENED IN 1961 AND THE MAIN ACTIVITY BY THEN WAS SHIP VISITATION. THE SECOND CALLED THE MARINE OFFICE WAS OPENED JUST RECENTLY IN JULY 2004

ACTIVITIES PERFORMED AT THE OLD PORT MET OFFICE INCLUDE (I)ATMOSPHERIC SURFACE OBSERVATION WHICH INCLUDE THE NORMAL METEOROLOGICAL PARAMETERS e.g TEMPERATURE,PRESSURE,WIND,R AINFALL etc

(ii) PREPARATION OF MONTHLY RETURNS(SUMMARIES) OF OBSERVED WEATHER AND TABULATION OF CHARTS FROM AUTOMATIC INSTRUMENTS (III) CALIBRATION OF PRECISION BAROMETERS ABOARD SHIPS.THIS IS DONE ON REQUEST. (IV) SHIP VISITATION
