Math Adoption Meeting February 25, 2010

District Mission To provide every student with a top-of-the-line college preparatory education so that they can enter and succeed in the college or university of their choice.

Our Purpose The committee will select either the Holt or Discovering textbook series for Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. The decision will be made by consensus based upon the objective evidence gathered during the adoption process. Target date for the decision: March 2010

Reminders from our first meeting We are adopting instructional materials that will be the base for our curriculum (the textbook is not our curriculum). All decisions are made based on sound research, what is in the best interests of our students and align with our district mission and core values. Please keep an open mind throughout the process.

How much math and which courses students take?  Students must not lack access to higher- level mathematics courses.  “This (lack of access) is unacceptable in the face of the ever-expanding technical demands posed by higher education and the 21 st -century job market.”  BSD has made progress in both minority math enrollment and the number taking higher –level math courses … but we must do more.

Ten Year Comparison Seniors Taking Math  In  53.4% of our seniors took math  23.6% of our diverse seniors  In  85.7% of our seniors are taking math  81.7% of our diverse seniors

Ten Year Comparison Seniors Taking Advanced Math ( Calculus, AP Statistics & Beyond) In  22.7% of our seniors were enrolled in advanced math  5.3% of our diverse seniors In  61.2% of our seniors are enrolled in advanced mathematics  35.7% of our diverse seniors

AP Calculus Pass Rates  In 2002  391 students took AP Calculus  225 took the test (58%)  155 of those students passed (69%)  In 2009  536 students took AP Calculus  503 took the test (94%)  372 of those students passed (74%)  This year 509 students are taking AP Calculus

Discussion and Review our Decision Plan

“Do you feel that you have enough information about the two instructional materials to make an informed recommendation to the Instructional Materials Committee?” Fist I am 100% confident that I am not ready to vote and need a lot more information. 1 Finger I still need to discuss certain issues. 2 Fingers I am more comfortable but would like to discuss some minor issues. 3 Fingers I’m not completely confident but feel comfortable to vote without further discussion. 4 Fingers I have a few hesitations, but I’m ready to vote. 5 Fingers I’m 100% confident that I have all the information I need and I am ready to vote. If anyone holds up fewer than three fingers, they should be given the opportunity to state their objections, what more information they need and the team should address their concerns.
