Wednesday, March 11 GUM 9.1 Vocabulary 8.1, 8.2 Literary Analysis and Composition

GUM 9.1 What are our lesson objectives? What will I be able to do by the end of this lesson? I will be able to: In verb phrases, use helping verbs that agree in number with their subjects. Use verbs that agree in number with their subjects.

How can subjects and verbs agree? Both subjects and verbs have number; they are either singular or plural. Subjects and verbs must agree in number. Singular subjects require singular verbs. He likes rice, but Laura does not. Plural subjects require plural verbs. They walk to the park, but the dogs run.

When a sentence has a verb phrase, the subject must agree with the first helping verb. Joseph has been practicing his drum routine. Even when a word, phrase, or clause comes between a subject and its verb, the subject and verb must still agree. Joseph, a stickler for perfection in all things, has been practicing his drum routine.
