Divisions of the Nervous System Section 35-3
1. Using Playdough at your table, sculpt a model of the brain. 2. Be sure to include the following parts: - Frontal lobe -Parietal Lobe -Occipital Lobe - Temporal Lobe -Cerebellum -Medulla Oblongata 3. Draw lines in your model to represent folds in your brain. 4. Label each part of your brain using paper and toothpicks.
Medulla oblongata Frontal lobe Occipital lobe Temporal lobe Cerebellum Parietal lobe
Reflexes ► Reflex- a quick, automatic response to a stimulus Processed in the spinal cord Ex. Blinking, sneezing Animals use reflexes to avoid danger
Reflex Arc ► Sensory receptor sensory neuron motor neuron effector ► Example: Stepping on a tack Receptor- toe feeling the tack, causing pain, ctivating receptor Sensory neuron- “pain” signal transmitted from receptor to motor neuron Motor neuron- signals leg to pull away from the tack Effector- leg muscles contract, foot is pulled away from the tack
Somatic vs. Autonomic ► Somatic nervous system- conscious control Example: Moving your fingers, toes, mouth, etc ► Autonomic nervous system- unconscious control Increasing heart rate and blood flow during exercise
