MOUNT PLEASANT PRIMARY SCHOOL Y4 SUMMER MATHS Converting time from analogue to digital will set the scene for Maths this term. Children will find the inverse for multiplication facts using division facts, as well as addition facts from subtraction facts. To further children’s understanding of geometric reasoning, children will practise translating shapes followed by measuring angles using a protractor. Measuring angles will secure their understanding of angles. To finish the term, children will be introduced to finding the mean, median and mode through data handling. Supporting Websites: SCIENCE Watch out! Investigations are due to take place this half term in Science! Year 4 will analyse air resistance by carrying out investigations. Children’s predictions as to what might happen will set the purpose for each investigation. Different materials will be tested in a parachute investigation. Following this, they will be using empty water bottles to launch objects, such as mice and vehicles testing which will travel the furthest and why. Finally, a balloon race will take place where pupils will see which sized-balloon travels the quickest and investigate why. Websites that support this topic: ENGLISH This term we will be studying Fly, Eagle, Fly! an African Tale by Christopher Gregorowski. Whilst studying this book, children will become accustomed to a variety of different genres, including play scripts, diary entries, narratives, non-chronological reports and poetry. Within their creative writing, children will develop more confidence in structuring their ideas and applying the features of each genre consistently and accurately. Supporting Websites: HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY Contrasting localities and fieldwork will set the topic for Geography this half term and will further their mathematical knowledge. Pupil’s will develop their map work skills locating terrains, contours, land, rivers and countryside using maps and atlases. Additionally, they will develop an understanding of map work symbols and keys. A visit to Beaumont park will enable pupils to identify the physical and human features of Lockwood, which they will later write coordinates for. To finish the term, pupil’s will create a map for a friend to follow using a compass and explore Google maps! HOMEWORK Year 4 homework will be set and handed out on Fridays, this will include English, Maths and Spellings. Please ensure homework is returned completed by Wednesday at the latest. Reminder: Please can all parents ensure their children come to school dressed in the correct school uniform; this includes plain black shoes or trainers. Children are not allowed to wear jewellery in school. Only studs and jewellery worn for the purpose of religious significance is allowed. PHYSICAL EDUCATION With the Commonwealth games coming up, Year 4 will be getting prepared through participating in their own competitions at Mount Pleasant this term in PE. The topics will be Athletics and Games. Children will develop skills such as turn-taking, sharing, co-operating and negotiating and values such as trust, fairness and respect for others. Outdoor games will include cricket, football, rounders, netball and hockey. Please ensure your child has their PE kit ART & DESIGN This term in art and design, children will become accustomed to the art works of famous contemporary landscape artists including William Turner and Claude Monet. Inspired by the contemporary artist William Turner, children will explore a range of different art forms and utensils, including pencil sketch and collage. A visit to Beaumont park will stimulate children’s ability to sketch a landscape through detailed, first-hand observations. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION In RE children will continue to explore beliefs and practices across different religions including Christianity, Sikhism, Islam and Judaism. After learning about the different gods within each religion, children will compare and contrast similarities and differences across the different religions. ICT Year 4 will be revisiting Movie Maker software to become skilled experts at recording and creating their very own news clips for Mount Pleasant Primary School! Consequently, they will gain further practise of inserting images, text, music, visual effects and finally, they will get a chance to publish their video! EDUCATIONAL VISITS Beaumont Park as part of the Art and Design topic on contemporary landscape. MUSIC Have you heard of the gnu, bellipong and zippi? These invented animals will be joining Year 4 in music this half term. Children will explore different musical elements whilst listening to ‘animal magic’. They will also move in character to the music of The bellipong and The zippi and sing both songs. MFL Children will consolidate their French vocabulary this half term, including greetings, numbers, colours, days of the week, months of the year, fruits and body parts through music and games. They will learn and add names of additional body parts to their repertoire of knowledge.
