Architectural Program Written definition of the required goals and functions of the project. Includes design criteria and constraints.   Architectural programming includes the research and decision-making process that identifies the scope of work to be designed. The architectural program is the responsibility of the owner; however, because owners often do not have the expertise to develop a program they often employ architects or other programming specialists to provide guidance. Many architects provide programming as an additional service to their clients.

Site Information Include a site analysis Legal Description Site Discovery Site location map Site visit documentation

Commercial Building Project Portfolio Civil Engineering and Architecture® Unit 4 – Lesson 4.2 – Commercial Building Design Presentation Code Requirements Type of Construction Occupancy classification Zoning ADA Egress Parking Landscaping Etc. Codes must be researched and requirements included in the project portfolio.

Viability Analysis Evaluation of the potential for success of the project. Is the project legally permissible? Is the project physically possible? Is the project financially feasible? Is the project a good choice for the community?

Preliminary Design Bubble diagrams Design development sketches Client meeting notes

Commercial Building Project Portfolio Civil Engineering and Architecture® Unit 4 – Lesson 4.2 – Commercial Building Design Presentation Project Management

Commercial Building Project Portfolio Civil Engineering and Architecture® Unit 4 – Lesson 4.2 – Commercial Building Design Presentation Conceptual Design Phase 1 includes conceptual drawings to show the general building and site layouts and building materials planned for the project. A rendering, site plan, floor plans, elevations, and a typical wall section should be included.

Engineering Calculations Commercial Building Project Portfolio Civil Engineering and Architecture® Unit 4 – Lesson 4.2 – Commercial Building Design Presentation Engineering Calculations All calculations that you perform in during the design of the project should be included in the Project Portfolio. These should include but are not limited to calculations related to: Structural design Water supply pressure Wastewater discharge Heat loss/gain Storm water runoff

Construction Drawings Show the location of all of the design features in a design project Include plan views, elevation views, sections, details, and schedules.

Plan View An orthographic projection of the building or site on a horizontal plan. Orthographic projection is a projection of the features of an object onto an imaginary plane of projection. The projection of the features of the object is made by lines of sight that are perpendicular to the plane of projection. LANDSCAPE PLAN ELECTRICAL PLAN

Plan View An view from above of the relationships between rooms, spaces and other physical features. Site Plan Landscaping Plan Floor Plan Reflected Ceiling Plan Roof Plan Electrical Plan Plumbing Plan Framing Plan Foundation Plan LANDSCAPE PLAN ELECTRICAL PLAN

Commercial Building Project Portfolio Civil Engineering and Architecture® Unit 4 – Lesson 4.2 – Commercial Building Design Presentation Plan Views Site Plan Landscaping Plan Floor Plan Reflected Ceiling Plan Roof Plan Electrical Plan Plumbing Plan Framing Plan Foundation Plan Many plan views will be required for a complete set of construction drawings.

Commercial Building Project Portfolio Civil Engineering and Architecture® Unit 4 – Lesson 4.2 – Commercial Building Design Presentation Floor Plan A representation of a building as seen from above at an imaginary horizontal plane approximately four feet above the floor. FLOOR PLAN

Elevation Views A group of drawings that show the exterior of a building An orthographic drawing Shows one side of a building Exterior shapes and finishes Vertical relationships of the building levels

Sections and Details Section: A type of drawing depicting an object as if it had been cut through to show the interior construction Detail: An enlargement of a specific area of a structure that is drawn where several components intersect or where small members are required Possible image http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-photo-3725359-blueprints.php

Renderings Purpose: To add an element of realism with the use of shades, shadows, and textures that would not otherwise be present Materials Used: Pencil, ink, water colors, marker, tempera, colored pencil, appliqué / overlay, and air brush Types: Exterior and interior perspective, elevations, plot plan, floor plan, and sections

Specifications Purpose: Provides the necessary written information to describe the materials, methods, and fixtures used in the design project

3D Models Purpose: To represent the final design in a physical form that is as realistic as possible, computer-generated or fabricated Advantage: Can be moved around and viewed from any angle; show interior and exterior details; the addition of scaled objects (people, furniture, vehicles) gives visual clues as to the actual size
