How did the 1932 Presidential election help Hitler?

The impact of the depression 6 million unemployed by 1933 Government was made up of lots of parties. Could not decide what to do. Government kept changing. People became unhappy with moderate parties. Started to support extremists – the Communists and the Nazis Hindenburg – the president became more involved- but old and out of touch.

30 th January 1933 It has been announced that Hitler will become the second most powerful man in Germany. He is to become chancellor. Lets go through the reasons why he has been made chancellor.

Stage 1: Elections July 1932 The Nazis won 37.3% of the vote. The Nazis were now the largest party. Hindenburg thought he could use the Nazis. He made Von Papen Chancellor and hoped that the Nazis would support him. Hitler refused to cooperate. Hindenburg called another election.

Stage 2: Elections: November 1932 The Nazis did not do as well. Their vote fell to 33.1%. Things looked bad for the Nazis. Schleicher stopped supporting von Papen. Schleicher became chancellor.

Stage 3 - January th – Papen can see that Schleicher is having problems keeping power. He makes a deal with Hitler where Hitler can be chancellor and Papen works in his cabinet. 28 th – Schleicher resigns 30 th Papen advises Hindenburg to make Hitler chancellor. He tells Hindenburg that he can control him.
