Hitler Defies Versailles Hitler’s rise to power was based primarily off the fact that he pledged to undo the Treaty of Versailles March 1935-Hitler begins to rebuild Germany’s military Inspired by the “slap on the wrist” from the League of Nations, Hitler begins to take greater risks March 7, 1936-Germany troops enter the Rhineland (violation of the Treaty)

Britain and France appease Hitler hoping to maintain European peace By occupying the Rhineland Hitler gains greater power and prestige inside Germany October 1936-Rome-Berlin Axis (Alliance between Mussolini and Hitler) is formed November 1936-Japan joins the alliance. The three nations officially call themselves the Axis Powers. Hitler Defies Versailles (Continued)

Munich Conference September 29, 1938-Conference called by Mussolini Members included Germany, France, Britain, & Italy France & Britain agreed that Hitler could take the Sudetenland in exchange Hitler agreed to respect Czechoslovakia’s borders Six months later Hitler took Czechoslovakia and Mussolini took Albania Hitler felt confident that France and Britain would not risk war Hitler and Stalin sign a non-aggression pact on August 23, 1939…Stalin hoped to buy time to rebuild his army
