Writing Summaries
Warm-up Choose one of the topics below and write summaries in no more than 12 words each. e.g. Birmingham – Birmingham is a large industrial city in the English west midlands. 1) Your home town 2) Bill Gates 3) Your academic subject 4) The last book you read 5) A film you saw recently

Criteria OWN In your OWN words Length? Depends – anywhere from one or two sentences to 50% of the original
Process What is the process? 1) Read the text carefully and check key vocabulary 2) Underline or highlight the important ideas. 3) Make notes of these, taking care to use your own words. 4) Write the summary using the notes, re-organising the order of ideas where necessary. 5) Check the summary to make sure no key points have been omitted or distorted.
Formal writing Do not use contractions: I’m I am, I’ve I have Do not begin sentences with ‘and’, ‘but’ or ‘so’.
