Making Recovery Visible: UK Recovery Month

What can we do to support Recovery?

The Mountain is egalitarian – all who set out on the spiritual quest are peers, regardless of background and belief. Many paths lead to the top, and there are many ways to walk those paths. Some will journey alone, while others seek kindred spirits with whom to travel. Some will intently make their way to the summit, while others will spend more time on the journey, perhaps not reaching the summit at all. And some, who would be teachers, will walk back down the path to help others farther along. Mountain Way Zen -

Building our Asset Map Values Passion Skills Talent Experience Knowledge Time Networks The ‘Skills of Heart, head and hand’

An Asset-Based Approach “Communities have never been built upon their deficiencies. Building communities has always depended upon mobilising the capacities and assets of people and place” Kretzman & McKnight 1993 ‘Building Communities from the inside out’

6 Principles of Community Building: Start with people’s Strengths Start with relationship building Place based work is vitally important since most things come together in the neighbourhood Citizen-led action is more durable and sustainable than professional intervention Social justice is at the heart of every community building effort When the conversation shifts from ‘isn’t it awful?” to ‘what’s possible?’ real community building can begin

UK Recovery Month is for people who want to:  Make recovery more visible, inclusive and accessible  Support movement toward a strength-based world; founded on community resilience & potential  Celebrate, promote and nurture the passion, wisdom and strength within families, neighbourhoods & communities  Support growth and transformation  Nurture relationships within and across communities  Write new hopeful stories  Challenge stigma & discrimination  Build a progressive & inclusive British Recovery Movement that supports recovery for all  Have fun  Recover UK Recovery Month is for everyone

Recovery Month will  Promote unity in communities & support new faces & voices in the British Recovery Movement  Celebrate diversity & demonstrate that people can and do recover  Bring people together to learn, connect & give  Make visible the good, the true & the beautiful  Promote the ‘5 Ways to Wellbeing’ for all  Make recovery more visible & accessible within communities  Celebrate and promote strengths within families, neighbourhoods & communities  Celebrate & support community builders & spark community action  Support new dialogue and shared community learning  Bring services & communities together as equals to learn & grow  Promote & support social justice & the empowerment of communities
