What is forensics? Forensics is the exciting field of crime solving. Who did it? How was it done?

Criminologist The people who investigate crime scenes They use basic scientific rules and methods This information is used in court to convict criminals

Warm-Up Fingerprint Identification Collect and analyze fingerprints Use the magnifying glass to identify loop, whorl and arch patterns Record the results next to each fingerprint

Procedures Please read page 5 in the packet provided.

Crime Scene Investigation Record fingerprints and notes on page 6 Print Recording Sheet

Warm-Up Dental Forensics and Biometrics Dental Forensic Specialist Identify teeth marks left on a victim or at a crime scene

What makes you teeth unique? Tooth size Teeth alignment Chipped tooth Angle of teeth Tooth shape Upper and lower jaw alignment Missing teeth

Dentists keep records and x-rays of your teeth Forensic dental experts make mold of teeth marks found at the scene of a crime or on a victim’s body. Molds are used to compare the teeth shape size and other features with dental records or the teeth of a crime suspect.

Procedures See page 8 of the packet provided

Forensic Challenge Who spilled the grape juice on the new white carpet?

Challenge: Lift the prints from empty glass of grape juice Compare the prints Identify the person who committed the crime

Forensic Challenge Who Ordered 900 Sticky Buns Too Many?

An activity in the Chromatography of Mixtures and Ink Identification

The Challenge: Using your skills as a forensic scientist and the chromatography method, find out which pen was used to write the order for the 1000 buns and identify who made the mistake.

Chromatography The process of chromatography is designed to separate mixtures into their individual parts.

Procedures: see page 16, 17, and 18 in packet

Who made the sticky bun mistake? Natalia, BettyAnne or Jose Natalia BettyAnne Jose
