OBJECTIVE: The aim of this lesson is to study Muslim teachings on clothing, worship and work to understand Muslim attitudes to equal rights for women.
OUTCOMES… Your GOALS for the end of this lesson are… Grades C You will be able to interpret the picture clues to identify the roles that men and women have in Islam. Grade B You will be able to use information from the video clip to give 2 arguments for and 2 against Muslim women wearing a veil. Grade A-A* You will be able to evaluate in detail, using examples, whether men and women are treated equally in Islam. Your GOALS for the end of this lesson are…
Starter… Look at the two women in this picture... What are the arguments FOR and AGAINST what each woman has chosen to wear? Discuss with the person next to you and list some ideas in the BACK of your book.
“All people are equal as the teeth of a comb” This quote can be found in the Hadith (a book containing the teachings of the prophet Muhammad). What does this tell us about how the religion views men and women? Islam teaches that men and women are equal and created by Allah.
Equal BUT different… In Islam men and women are seen as having DIFFERENT but EQUALLY important roles. The Qur’an teaches that Allah made men STRONGER and so they should protect women...who in turn are required to have the children.

OUTCOMES… Grade C You will be able to interpret the picture clues to identify the roles that men and women have in Islam. Did you achieve your GOAL…
“All people are equal as the teeth of a comb” First thoughts… “All people are equal as the teeth of a comb” Look at the lists you have written. Do you agree with this statement? Give at least one reason for your opinion at this stage.
Clothing… The Qur’an teaches that BOTH men and women should dress modestly. However a lot of people outside of Islam think that the rules on clothing are oppressive to women and too strict. Do these rules stop men and women being equal?
Watch the following clip… http://www.truetube.co.uk/global/customs-and-traditions/feminism-and-the-veil What are the arguments for and against wearing the veil (hijab/Niqab/Burqa)? FOR AGAINST Men are less likely to bother or harass you. It’s unfair because men don’t have to wear it. You can control who sees your body and how much. Why should women suffer because men are too easily tempted? It forces people to look beyond your physical appearance. It’s not practical to wear it when doing certain jobs. You can’t express your personality if you are wearing it. Gives women independence. It might cause Islamophobic people to attack you. It shows people what you believe as a Muslim.
OUTCOMES… Did you achieve your GOAL?… Grade B You will be able to use information from the video clip to give at least 2 arguments for and 2 against Muslim women wearing a veil. Did you achieve your GOAL?…
“All people are equal as the teeth of a comb” Second thoughts… “All people are equal as the teeth of a comb” Whether you agree or disagree, you need to be able to see both sides of the argument.
Second thoughts… Write out the quote from the previous slide and then underneath, in bullet points, write THREE reasons why in Islam this could be true and THREE reasons why other people might disagree. Use the work and notes you have done today to help you.
“All people are equal as the teeth of a comb” Reflection… Yes because... They have equal roles like working, getting married and starting a family, bringing up the children. Both men and women are also entitled to education and to work. Both men and women are expected to dress modestly. No because... Men are expected to provide for and protect women. Women should look after the home and family. Women have to cover up more (Burqa/Hijab etc...) “All people are equal as the teeth of a comb” Add other ideas in green pen
Final thoughts… Now explain which arguments, the YES or the NO, you agree with the most. Give REASONS to support what you are saying. “I agree with the YES arguments because….”
OUTCOMES… Grade A-A* You will be able to evaluate whether men and women are treated equally in Islam. Did you achieve your GOAL?…
Plenary Do you think the school was right to suspend the woman? Explain your answer. Some countries believe that it is wrong for people to wear clothes in the workplace which highlight their faith. Do you agree? Azmi took her case to an employment tribunal on the basis that she had been discriminated against on religious grounds and that she had been victimised as a result of complaining. The tribunal dismissed her case of religious discrimination but found that she had been victimised.
