Galatians 5:1 David Jeremiah “The figure of a yoke is a good metaphor for bondage because an animal in a yoke has no alternative but to submit to the will of its master. That is what living under the law is like.”

Galatians 5:1 David Jeremiah “The figure of a yoke is a good metaphor for bondage because an animal in a yoke has no alternative but to submit to the will of its master. That is what living under the law is like. But Jesus told us that we are to trade in the yoke of the law and take upon us His yoke. (Matthew 11:29). “In contrast to the law, the yoke of Jesus is easy and His burden is light (Matthew 11:30). When we become Christians, we do away with our slavery to the law and become servants of Jesus Christ. And when you are a servant of Jesus, you do not experience the burden of the law; instead, you know the easy, gentle yoke of a relationship with the Savior.”

Galatians 5:2-4 Consequences of Legalism 1. Christ’s provisions avail nothing toward life

Galatians 5:3 Ron Merryman “…one under the law cannot pick or choose what he will or will not perform: The law is a compact unit like a sheet of glass—break any part and you break the whole!...Moreover, under law, no amount of obedience can make up for disobedience. One’s efforts at obedience cannot replace the glass that was shattered by his disobedience.”

Galatians 5:2-4 Consequences of Legalism 1. Christ’s provisions avail nothing toward life 2. Bound to comply with all terms

Galatians 5:4c Howard Vos “If one has stood in grace he has fallen from it the moment he seeks justification by legalism. To put it another way, if one is perched on the high platform of grace, he may be said to have fallen from it on to the ground of self-righteousness when he puts himself under the law.”

Galatians 5:2-4 Consequences of Legalism 1. Christ’s provisions avail nothing toward life 2. Bound to comply with all terms 3. Cut off from fellowship with Christ 4. Departure from the realm of grace

Galatians 5:5 NKJV For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. KJVFor we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. NASBFor we through the Spirit, by faith, are waiting for the hope of righteousness. NIVFor through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope.

Galatians 5:5 David Jeremiah “The law promises an immediate reward for living according to its rules. A person might revel in the fact that he had not murdered anyone or committed adultery or stolen any property. He could honestly brag that he has kept all of the feast days and honored the Sabbath and given his tithes. “But such conduct never provides a genuine reward because it leaves that person feeling empty. At the core of his being, he knows that it is not enough. And the longer he tries to live life by the law, the more he realizes how impossible it is to achieve any lasting peace. His reward is fleeting and it fades away. “But when we live by faith in Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit … brings the lasting reward of hope and the assurance of righteousness in Christ. We have a hope in righteousness that is ours purely through faith.”
