Keeping Mobile Technology Labs Running, In Tip Top Shape Marlene VerBruggeKansas State University Carey RoosWashington State University Jim DeidrickUniversity of Minnesota March 2015

Purpose of MTL The Mobile Technology Lab (MTL) is a mobile, internet-ready computer lab for use in a variety of settings. The lab provides access to technology for military youth to communicate with deployed loved ones, learn about technology, or make videos/pictures, etc. to send deployed loved ones. SOMK youth may also use the MTL in developing speaking and presentation skills. OMK Information Paper, FMWRC-CYS, 6 January 2011

Purpose of This Training Become familiar with the Mobile Technology Lab (MTL) Understand care and feeding of the MTL Provide tips on updating the WIN7 E6410, E6420, & E6430 Laptops Understand the purpose and use of Deep Freeze Understand the Anti-Virus Software and Windows Update

Introduction to the MTL The MTL includes –6 Pelican Cases –10 Computers plus associated equipment For convenience, each MTL is split into 2 Pods –Each Pod consists of 3 Pelican Cases Case 1-1 Case 2-1 Case 1-2 Case 2-2 Case 1-3 Case 2-3 –Pods 1 & 2 are identical

–1 Canon Pixma MP495 Inkjet Printer –1 Color Ink (Pixma 211xl Color) –2 Black Ink (Pixma 210xl Black) –1 Surge Protector –5 USB Headsets Original Equipment in Pod Cases 1-1 and 2-1 (Weighs approx 51#)

–2 Dell Laptop Computers –25 Pack of DVD’s –25 Pack CD-R –1 Canon Powershot A 2500 Digital Camera –1 2 GB Memory Card –1 Canon Vixia HF400 Camcorder –1 16 GB Memory Card –1 Aegis 160 GB Portable HD Original Equipment in Pod Cases 1-2 and 2-2 (Weighs approx 51#)

–3 Dell Laptop Computers –1 Extension Cord Store the Resource Media, Dell Backup Disks (White Pack of 7 disks) in secure location Original Equipment in Pod Cases 1-3 and 2-3 (Weighs approx 51#)

MTL Laptops Dell Latitude E6410, E6420 and E6430 Windows 7 OS 64 BIT Computers with 4 GB RAM WebCam, BlueTooth, MS Office Suite 2013

“MTL systems” Spreadsheet 1.When the MTL was shipped, included was a SpreadSheet with all of the Equipment Serial #’s. 2.I want to verify that you have that document. If you don’t have the spreadsheet you can get it by from Heather Doland Schantz at: 3.Before the MTL can be used in “public” there are many updates to the computers that will need to be done; Windows Updates and Virus Updates need to be done. Before you do any Updates you first need to understand Faronics Deep Freeze.

Understanding Deep Freeze

Deep Freeze Purpose and Use Faronics Deep Freeze Enterprise “Your computer, like new with every restart.”

Why is Deep Freeze Necessary? Deep Freeze “freezes” any changes that are made to the computer This includes documents that you may have created, updates, etc. Provides security for the Hard Drive

Memorizing computer's settings and configuration Returning system to its original state with every restart Recovering full system is as easy as restarting the computer Creates a “ThawSpace” where documents can be saved Deep Freeze Purpose and Use

Deep Freeze Enterprise Terms Hard drive (HD) is “frozen” to prevent any data being saved on next re-boot HD is “thawed” to allow software updates and saving of data A created partition (space) that can be used to store & retain programs after a restart, even when HD is frozen 1.Frozen State 2.Thawed State 3.ThawSpace

How to Work With Deep Freeze Access DeepFreeze and Thaw the HD by using the MTLAdmin login: 1.Go to the Right Task Bar (▲Bottom Right, in the Hidden Icons) 2.Find the Polar Bear Logo 3.Hold “Shift” and Double Click on the icon to bring up the password screen 4.WIN7 Pword, Click OK

Deep Freeze Enterprise Terms If the Polar Bear has a small red x in the bottom right corner that means the HD is thawed No Red x means the HD is frozen “Thawed” State OR “Frozen” State

How to work with Deep Freeze To Thaw a drive select 1.Boot Frozen 2.Boot Thawed on next x times 3.Boot Thawed Reboot computer and make updates Make the next appropriate boot action as necessary

Deep Freeze 1.Each time MTLUser or MTLAdmin logs into the laptops, files that were saved during the previous session are deleted, or updates that were previously installed are undone 2.If files are deleted from the previous session the HD is frozen 3.Save files in the “Thawspace” Drive 4.If updates are not updating, the drive is in a “frozen” state; “thaw” the HD, restart and run updates and then return HD to “frozen” state

Working with Anti-Virus Software Microsoft Security Essentials Insure HD is “thawed” The key to any anti-virus program is to update it often Update every other time the MTL is used

Working with Windows Update 1.Insure the HD is “thawed” 2.Windows Update can be done every other time the MTL is used 3.Avoid waiting over 1 month or more 4.Can take a couple of hours to update 5.On a “Thawed” computer - go to the Control Panel (Start  Control Panel  Windows Update)
