By: Denise Black Kennesaw State University Standard: S2L1. Students will investigate the life cycles of different living organisms. a. Determine the sequence of the life cycle of common animals in your area: a mammal such as a cat or dog or classroom pet, a bird such as a chicken, an amphibian such as a frog, and an insect such as a butterfly.

Georgia’s Amphibian Hyla cinerea 4 th graders from Armuchee Elementary in Floyd County petitioned the state’s government Georgia’s Representatives agreed to add the amphibian to the state symbols in February of 2005 How did the green tree frog become Georgia’s State Symbol for Amphibians?

What do you think? Should the state of Georgia have made the green tree frog the state amphibian?

Habitat The green tree frog is found in swampy areas near lakes, streams, and ponds.

Map Georgia

Interesting Information Small frog, reaching 2.5 inches in length Bright green Diet – crickets, moths, flies, etc. Big round ears on the sides of their head –Some frogs make so much noise that they can be heard for miles! –They have special ears that are connected to their lungs which keeps the frogs from hurting themselves with their noisy calls! Click on the frog to hear their noisy calls. How can you tell if a frog doesn't have ears? You yell "Free Flies" and he doesn't come.

Super Skin : They drink and breathe through it Frogs shed their skin to keep it healthy This looks pretty nasty. They twist and turn to stretch themselves out of their old skin. Finally, the frog pulls the skin off over their head, like a sweater, and then (this is gross) the frog EATS IT! Do frogs have teeth? Yes, most frogs have a ridge of very small cone teeth around the upper edge of the jaw

Life Cycle

1 st Stage Frogs lay many eggs. Most eggs are found in calm water. The eggs usually hatch In about 6 – 21 days.

2 nd Stage 7 to 10 days after the tadpole has hatched, it will begin to swim around and feed on algae. Some even school like fish. The gills disappear. Tadpoles get tiny teeth.

3 rd Stage After about 6 to 9 weeks, tiny legs sprout. The tadpole may now eat dead insects and even plants.

After about 9 weeks, the tadpole looks more like a teeny frog with a really long tail.

4 th Stage The frog loses it’s tail. Between 12 to 16 weeks, depending on water and food supply, the frog has completed the full growth cycle known as metamorphosis.

Which stage last longer?
