MOB-PIW NOTE: Remember when doing this drill your boat crew will be short one crew person. Try doing this exercise with one of your crew standing-down during this evolution! This can be very difficult if there is only the coxswain or the coxswain and one crew on the facility!
MOB/PIW Methods to be used are: 1. Direct: Recover PIW using the reach and grab technique. (preferred) 2. Direct: Recover PIW using a boat hook. 3. In-direct: using a throwable device with a line attached. 4. Multiple PIWs using combination of direct and in-direct approaches and recovery.

MOB/PIW H. Coxswain warns crew of turn and then executes appropriate turn considering associated risks, traffic, and prevailing weather conditions. I.Coxswain assigns crew positions and tasking based on PIW condition. J. Confirm visually and verbally the position and condition of PIW.

MOB/PIW O. Steer for PIW & release pointer when sighted. P. During your approach, coxswain will loose sight of the PIW & crew will have to lean over the side and pass the PIW’s relative position to the coxswain; PIW off the bow, PIW off first stanchion, etc.
MOB/PIW Q. The crew should notify the coxswain as the boat approaches the pick-up point so that the coxswain can stop the boat in time. R. As the boat gets to the pick-up point the coxswain should turn the boat slightly toward the PIW so as to drift onto the PIW
MOB/PIW S. To stop the boat the coxswain should give the engines a shot of reverse to take all headway off. T. The crew should assist the PIW into the boat or if unconscious, Stabilize the PIW to keep PIW’s head out of the water and radio for assistance.
