The Chicago Fire of 1871

There was a man in Chicago called “Peg Leg” Sullivan who had a habit of visiting friends.

In 1871, in the fall, “Peg Leg” went to visit Patrick and Mrs. O’Leary but they were in bed.

He sat down to rest, but then in a flash, he got up to yell.

In the back of Mr. and Mrs. O’Leary’s dwelling, the old barn was lit up.

He was in a panic because the rustic shed was on fire. He was frantic.

With his yell, Mr. and Mrs. O’Leary got up, but they could not put out the fire.

The problem was that no rain had fallen in a long, long time and now there was a strong wind.

Quick as a flash, the fire traveled over the land. The wind swept up the fire and it jumped over the water.

Before long, all of Chicago was lit up. It was very drastic and people could not do much to stop it.

At last, rain fell down to drench out the fire. It had been hectic and very wild.

So many people lost all of their things. In fact, in the end, much of Chicago was lost.

That happened more than a hundred years ago. Now Chicago is a big city again. Read againAll done
