THE PROSPECTS ON THE NUCLEAR POWER DEVELOPMENT AND THE APPLICATION OF THE RUSSIAN VVER & BN REACTOR TECHNOLOGY IN CHINA China National Nuclear Corporation , Zhangt May, 2010

Ⅰ.The prospects on the nuclear development in China Outline Ⅱ.The application of the VVER reactor technology in China Ⅲ.The application of the BN reactor technology in China

Ⅰ.The prospects on the nuclear development in China

The development opportunities of nuclear power in China ★ The pressures from global warming and environmental protection contribute to the resuscitation of the nuclear power in the world, and this provide supports to the development of nuclear power in China.

The development opportunities of nuclear power in China ★ In recent years, China’s power requirement has been rising rapidly, and the installed power-generating capacity increased at an average speed of 11.8% from 2000 to 2009.

The development opportunities of nuclear power in China ★ The installed capacity of nuclear power is only 1.04% of the total capacity in China. It is big gap from the worlds average level of 16%.

The development of nuclear power is a good choice for China to achieve sustainable development ★ A realistic choice for China to optimize energy structure and ensure energy security ★ An important way for China to fuel domestic demand and boost the economic development ★ A major aspect for China to promote innovation and technology and upgrade the equipment manufacturing industry ★ An important mean for China to carry out the international commitment of reducing carbon emission

Present Condition of Nuclear Power in China ★ At present, mainland China has 11 nuclear power units in operation, with an installed capacity of 9100MW. Qinshan NPP ( CNNC shares 100% ) Qinshan Phase II NPP ( CNNC shares 50% ) Qinshan Phase III NPP ( CNNC shares 51% )

★ All of the Nuclear Power Plants have kept running safely and stably. Tianwan NPP ( CNNC shares 50% ) Daya Bay NPP ( CNNC shares 45% ) Ling Ao NPP ( CNNC shares 45% ) Present Condition of Nuclear Power in mainland China

★ At present, China has 20 nuclear power units under construction, with an installed capacity of 21920MW. China has the largest scale of nuclear power construction in the world. Present Condition of Nuclear Power in China

PLAN By the development planning of China’s nuclear power ( ), the installed capacity will reach 40 GW in operation and 18 GW under construction by By MW in operation 21800MW under construction By MW in operation 18000MW under construction The development planning of nuclear power in China

Briefly Introduction to CNNC ★ The major body for the R&D of China’s nuclear power ★ The only supplier of nuclear fuels for the operating nuclear power plants in China ★ The controlling shareholder of all the existing nuclear power plants in operation of China

★ With a complete system of nuclear science, technology and industry 铀 矿水 冶 浓 缩 组件制造 运 行 后处理 再循环 废物处理 Briefly Introduction to CNNC

Three Main Areas of CNNC : Nuclear PowerNuclear FuelApplication of Nuclear Technology Briefly Introduction to CNNC

★ Consists of over 100 memberships of industrial enterprises, companies, research institutes and institutions. Briefly Introduction to CNNC

International Exchanges and Cooperation ★ CNNC has established extensive business and economic cooperation with over 40 countries and regions, involved in 100-odd companies. Briefly Introduction to CNNC

50 years' experience in nuclear industry development 30 years' experience in the R&D, project construction, operation and management of nuclear power CNNC has experiences in nuclear power 300MW PWR CNNC has the ability to design and construct units of 300MWe, 600MWe and 1000MW PWR. 600MW PWR1000MW PWR

Ⅱ.The application of the VVER reactor technology in China

Tianwan NPP Phase Ⅰ ★ Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant Phase Ⅰ (2×1060 Mwe, VVER AES-91), the biggest economic and technical cooperation project between China and Russia up to now.

The macrocontract was signed in Beijing on December 29, The project started on Oct. 20, Tianwan NPP Phase Ⅰ

★ Unit 1 was put into commercial operation on May 17, ★ Unit 2 was put into commercial operation on August 16, Tianwan NPP Phase Ⅰ ★ The two units have achieved good performance with 44TWh electric generation in the past 3 years.

Units 3 and 4 of Tianwan NPP Expansion ★ Units 3 and 4 of Tianwan NPP Expansion will be constructed by China and Russia together with two more VVER units

Ⅲ.The application of the BN reactor technology in China

Fast reactor ★ Raise the utilization rate of uranium resources from 1% to 60% ★ Transmute the long-lived radioactive wastes , reduce the size of radioactive wastes ★ Ensure the sustainable development of nuclear power in China Fast reactor is necessary to China’s nuclear power industry

2025 ~ ~ China Experimental Fast Reactor 中国实验快堆 (CEFR) China Demonstration Fast Reactor 中国示范快堆 (CDFR) Commercial Fast Reactor Plant 商用快堆电站 The three-step development of fast reactor

China Experimental Fast Reactor scene China Experimental Fast Reactor ★ CEFR is a key cooperative project between China and Russia in test nuclear reactor areas, and it is the first sodium- cooled and pool-type fast reactor in China

Inner parts impression drawing of CEFR China Experimental Fast Reactor ★ Designed with 65MW in thermal power and 20MW in electric power, CEFR was started in May 2000, and has completed preparations for criticality up to now.

China Demonstration Fast Reactor ★ CDFR will enhance safety, reliability and economical efficiency upon the CEFR, partly with fourth generation characters. ★ we plan to construct CDFR by importing tow Russian BN-800 type units.

Research on fast reactor ★ The Chinese government has built the National Fast Reactor Research Center, and it will strengthen the R&D of fast reactor technologies .

★ There is a wide prospect on nuclear power cooperation between China and Russia, and the rapid growth of energy needs provide opportunities for the further cooperation between China and Russia. Cooperation between China and Russia on nuclear power

★ CNNC and the Russian National Nuclear Company had signed an framework agreement on Units 3 and 4 of Tianwan NPP Expansion construction and “The memorandum of understanding on the construction of the two units of BN-800 type demonstration fast reactor in China” on 23 Mar Cooperation between China and Russia on nuclear power

★ CNNC will take an open attitude to dedicate itself to the development of China’s nuclear power, and strengthen the exchanges and cooperations with the international nuclear industry.
