Clean Water Acts Clean Water Act of 1977: Officially Amended in National amendment that did the following: Established the basic structure for regulating pollutants discharges into the waters of the United States. 2.) Gave EPA the authority to implement pollution control programs 3.) Maintained existing requirements to set water quality standards for all contaminants in surface waters. 4.) Made it unlawful for any person to discharge any pollutant from a point source into navigable waters, unless a permit was obtained under its provisions. 5.) Funded the construction of sewage treatment plants under the construction grants program. 6.) Recognized the need for planning to address the critical problems posed by nonpoint source pollution. Government Agency in Charge: Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Clean Water Act of Clean Water Act of 1981: Helped to streamline municipal construction grants under the process and improved the treatment process. It is a national amendment that aimed to eliminate discharge of pollutants in navigable waters. Agency Responsible: EPA Clean Water Act of 1987: Amended in 1987 to help aid with toxic “hot spots”. It also provided attention to storm water regulation. Again, this amendment is national and its goal was to restore the physical, chemical, and biological integrity of the US waters. Agency Responsible: EPA
