Rebellions Rebellions can take place on many different scales in many different sets of circumstances. We see smaller personal rebellions, national rebellions, ideological rebellions, etc.

The picture of this burning monk is the most symbolic image of protest of the Vietnam War. The image is shocking; the monk’s body positioning and face appear serene while his body is simultaneously engulfed in flames. We see the gasoline can resting besides him and we picture the terrifying procedure that led up to this point. Even though the monk was specifically protesting the treatment of Buddhists by South Vietnam’s government, the picture came to represent more than that. It represents the human waste that occurred en masse during the Vietnam War. The fire evokes the destructive horror of war and its inability to be controlled. It also takes place on an average city street— jarring the routine of daily life, forcing the world to think about the war. This photograph is the most symbolic and lasting image of protest during this era as the monk uses an extreme form of protest during an extreme time in history.
