Oskar Schell Holden Caulfield 9 years old Born and raised in Manhattan Coping with the loss of his father after the traumatic events of September 11th, 2001 16 years old Born and raised in Manhattan Coping with the loss of his younger brother, Allie, after his death from leukemia Undertakes a journey through the 5 boroughs of NYC in order to better understand his father Struggles to communicate & understand his feelings Leaves school and travels around NYC in a failed attempt to better understand life Struggles to communicate & understand his feelings

Oskar Schell Despite being haunted by the phone, a communication device, Oskar can’t talk about his traumatic experience.

He flunked out of school(s). Holden Caulfield Holden is equally incapable of coping with the death of his younger brother. He broke all the windows in the garage on the night that Allie died (a cry for help, but not a verbal communication of need). He flunked out of school(s). He talks to his little sister and his dead brother, but is not able to effectively communicate his need. He confesses in the all the wrong people (a prostitute, a flaky date, cab drivers, etc.)
