Preparations at the Undergraduate Level Actively think about what you like to do & what career or job you’d like to have after training; then strive to reach that goal seeking as much help from others as necessary along the way. Choose classes carefully with an advisor, apply & challenge yourself, be an active participant, do as well as you can; you are likely paying a lot for this education, wring the most out of it. Seize opportunities to explore research beyond lab courses, do an independent study, volunteer in a lab, get a work-study job in a lab or a part-time job in a hospital, lab, or company that can provide additional experience related somehow to what you’d like to do as a career. Don’t be shy! This is your life & your career!

How do I get there? Many ways.

A Personal History BA in Chemistry – didn’t want to serve people MS, PhD in Biochemistry – work on pesticide impacts on development of male steroidogenic tissues Postdoc in Reproductive Biology/Reproductive Endocrinology – work on gonadotropin function & metabolism & follicular growth and development Fellowship led to collaborations with social scientists & anthropologists – ended up working on questions about humans Faculty position – the unique collaborations forged earlier have led to work on human reproductive ecology, analytical chemistry of field & clinic assays, basic questions about elements of reproductive & endocrine systems.

There are many: - career paths available in endocrinology & allied professions. - areas of active research. - possible training programs actively seeking qualified students. Conclusions: Seize Opportunity! You are today’s academic research workforce & tomorrow’s scientific workforce. Seize Opportunity! Preparation & pursuit is up to you.
