Presentation transcript:

Emphasis Principle of Art - occurs any time an element within an artwork is given dominance by the artist. In other words, the artist makes part of the work stand out, in order to draw the viewer's eye there first.

Use of Color Size Position in the Composition

Framed in Emphasis

Mixed Media Artwork Using multiple materials, you will create an emphasis on an animal or insect of your choice – By creating a frame around your main subject matter you will literally be defining the space where you want people to look at the most – Color will also separate the emphasis of your subject matter vs. the background space of the composition

Watercolor Paints and Illustration Pens

How to design your composition: You may need to use multiple images – Some images ave too much focus on one animal or one thing and have very little background – This image was fine because you can see details in the branch and leaves

In these images, the birds are very clear, however the background is blurred and you wouldn’t have any other elements within your composition. You could use these image but find another to add more to your final work.

Reference images of similar environments This butterfly image may or may not have had these flowers in the background The artist could have added the flowers to make their composition more interesting The flowers could be present in the same type of environment where you’d see a butterfly

Chances are this image didn’t have all the other sea-like elements within the original photo. Even though the extra illustrations add to the overall composition, they could have had more detail.

Develop Your Composition In your sketchbooks, draw out exactly what you want your image to look like. Pick one subject matter to emphasize within your composition. – Does not need to be centered – BUT the rectangle around it will be centered Research images – do not draw from your head! Add elements to the composition if needed – Make sure they could or would exist together in reality.
