VOCABULARY WORDS- NIGHT OF THE PUFFLINGS Please go over the definitions for these vocabulary words with your student. There will be a test on them on Friday. ashore- on or to the shore (from the water) burrows- holes or tunnels small animals use as underground nests instinctively- acting on an inner feeling; done without thinking launching- sending up in the air stranded- in a helpless or difficult position uninhabited- having no people living there venture- to set out to do something even though it might be dangerous

ashore- on or to the shore (from the water) A starfish is washed ashore. It has been uncommon to see icebergs wash ashore.

burrows- holes or tunnels small animals use as underground nests Beetles, scorpions, rabbits, newts and other animals live in burrows.

instinctively- acting on an inner feeling; done without thinking Mother’s instinctively take great care of their babies.

launching- sending up in the air The launching of the Columbia space shuttle at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

stranded- in a helpless or difficult position After a flood, the horses were stranded on an island.

uninhabited- having no people living there You will find uninhabited places on an erupting island or a calm, mountainous island.

venture- to set out to do something even though it might be dangerous People venture into the wilderness on this hike. A beautiful scene is often found during a traveling venture.
